Poem: "If You Can't Change the World"

This poem was written outside the regular prompt calls. It fills the "1 National Homemade Cookies Day" square in my 10-1-21 card for the Fall Festival Bingo. It has been sponsored by a pool with [personal profile] ng_moonmoth. This poem belongs to the Broken Angels thread of the Polychrome Heroics series.

"If You Can't Change the World"

[Saturday, October 1, 2016]

Cas was busy in the kitchen
when Boss Blaster came home
with a new client in tow and
stopped to stare in shock.

"What's wrong?" Cas said
as he lifted a tray of cookies
over the heads of the kids
milling around him and set it
on the dining table to cool.

"I wasn't expecting to come in
to find at least a dozen kids
swarming the kitchen,"
Boss Blaster said mildly.

"Did I do something wrong?"
Cas said, looking at him.

"Not exactly, but I was
planning to have a meeting
at the table," said the boss.

Cas cast a guilty look at
the dining table, which was
covered in three different kinds
of cookies on multiple sheets.

"Uh, sorry?" Cas said.

"I don't mind sharing
the place, and I love
your cooking, but it'd
help to know when you
plan something this ...
elaborate," said the boss.

"Guess I didn't think of that,"
Cas said, ducking his head.

"You're used to running the house,"
Boss Blaster guessed. "I see."

"I didn't think you'd get back
this early, either," said Cas.
"As soon as we finish baking,
they're going to Edie's place.
We just have a bigger kitchen."

"That makes sense," said the boss.
"Do you want to tell me what you
were thinking when you planned this?"

"It's Homemade Cookies Day," Cas said.
"I got to thinking about how you want
to make the neighborhood into more of
a community, and well ..." He shrugged.
"If you can't change the world with
fresh chocolate chip cookies, then
how can you change the world?"

Boss Blaster smiled. "Well, when
you put it that way, I can't argue,"
he said. "For future reference, if you
plan to tie up part of the house, I'd
appreciate a little more warning."

"Yes, boss," Cas said fervently.
"I'll be more careful about that.
I just got ... a little excited."

"They're cookies, of course
they're exciting," the boss said.
"So what did you folks make?"

"Chewy Chocolate Cookies with
milk chocolate or mint chips,"
Cas said, pointing to them.
"Trail Mix Cookies, that's
an old family recipe."

Some bohemians made
surprisingly good food.

"Snickerdoodles?"
Boss Blaster guessed.

"Pumpkin Spice Cookies,
because it's fall," said Cas.

The oven timer went off.

Cas pulled out a tray of
pink-and-white cookies,
shooing children out of
the way so he could
put them on the table.

He had to move a tray
to make room for these.

"What in the world are those?"
Boss Blaster asked, staring.

"Blood Orange and Poppy Polenta
Shortbread Cookies," Cas said.
"I got the recipe from Dante."

Italians made interesting cookies.

One of the children tugged on
Boss Blaster's sleeve. "Is Cas
in trouble?" she whispered.

"No, cookies are a good surprise,"
the boss replied. "Next time, he'll
remember to tell me in advance,
so there's no harm done. We'll
just move the meeting downstairs."

"That's fine," Cas said. "The table
down there is all cleaned off."

"Cleaned off?" said the boss.

"Edie had a group of older kids
decorating sugar cookies earlier,"
said Cas. "I picked easier recipes
for the younger ones up here."

"I don't see any sugar cookies,"
said the boss. "Did they all
get eaten up already?"

"Of course not, I put up
a batch for you," Cas said,
handing him a large tub.

Boss Blaster looked inside.
They were decorated like
tiny hot rods and race flags.

He laughed. "I love them."

"Thanks, boss," said Cas.
"I'll box up some others for
you as soon as they cool off."

"Excellent," said Boss Blaster.
"And Cas? Mark this holiday
on next year's calendar too."

"Yes, boss," Cas said cheerfully.

Now there is a sentiment I can get behind! I do love me some cookies...

Kitchen sink cookies tend to be a bit chewy/crunchy... it's the stainless steel I think.

But yeah, chocolate chips for mood improvement and antidepressant, anything else for nutrition.

Oo! I shall do that! I don't mind a bit of bitter taste actually.

The store next to me often has cranberry oatmeal cookies. Basically, oatmeal raisin except they swapped dried cranberries for the raisins. Very nice.

Yeah, I've always found "oatmeal raisin" kind of boring. So the kind of oatmeal cookie I make has pistachio nut meats, crystallized ginger, and dried mango bits, and is seasoned with cardamom, cinnamon, garam masala, and curry powder. Sometimes I make a spicier version with chili mangos and hot curry powder. And the whole thing can be made gluten-free (at least for values where oats are manageable) with garbanzo bean flour. That version can be a bit crumbly in the setup, but bakes out OK.

Yeah, pretty much. The mixins are all prevalent in various Indian sweets. And the level of sweetness in the default oatmeal cookie recipe is a good foil for the hot stuff. Works out to a nicer balance between the spicing and the overall taste than the intense, rot-your-teeth sweetness of many Indian sweets. At least as far as I'm concerned.
