He does sketching exercises. He's still exploring modern media, from having nicer pens to having electronic art.

I'm thinking (but don't know) that line was better for reproduction on the pulp and cheap printing. Hatching and other techniques of the ilk were lithographic, and Steve couldn't likely have taken the acid related fumes of preparing a stone.

He's got lots of options now, though he's going to wonder if people really like his stuff or if it's that he's Captain America.

(Though I could see him getting an in with some artist co-op and later he realizes that they knew all along.

I could see him submitting things anonymously or under a pseudonym for that reason.
