The Transition Movement

Here is a description of the transition movement -- shifting from overuse of the Earth to a more sustainable future -- with a list of useful books. I'm not convinced that energy descent is unavoidable, but it's likely enough to need planning; and we really can't continue indefinitely in the direction we're headed.

There's a metaphorical elephant in the room that people aren't talking about.
Over-population.

The thing is, we can pretty much estimate what the carrying level of the Earth is, i.e how big a population can live in a sustainable fashion given current agrarian technology.

The problem is: that number is around 2 billion, plus or minus a billion or so. [although climate change is likely to degrade that.]

So far, not really seeing much to address this issue that doesn't depend upon other non-sustainable technology.

Hmm...

I think that overpopulation is a related, but separate, issue. Crisis Earth has a lot of different pieces, some of which need different solutions and will appeal to different people. And there are various things we could do about overpopulation, ranging from free birth control to space colonization.
