Poem: "Volander"

This poem was written outside the regular prompt calls. It fills the "Rag Rugs" square in my 3-1-24 card for the National Crafting Month Bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by [personal profile] janetmiles. It belongs to the series A Poesy of Obscure Sorrows.

"Volander"
the ethereal feeling of looking down at the world
through an airplane window, able to catch a glimpse
of far-flung places you'd never see in person,
free to let your mind wander, trying to imagine
what they must feel like down on the ground --
the closest you'll ever get to an objective point of view

Looking down from above,
the world is a peaceful place.

Lakes catch the light like
blue sequins, and rivers
with ribbons of silver.

Corduroy fields of
green and brown drape
themselves over hills.

Forests spread out,
shaggy as rag rugs,

trailing away into
velveteen prairies.

From a bird's eye view,
everything is serene
and beautiful to behold.

It is only people who make
the world violent and ugly,

scarring it with borders
that exist only in

human delusions.
