Birdfeeding

Looking out the windows this morning, I saw a mourning dove, a lady cardinal, and a blue jay at the fly-through feeder plus a male cardinal and several house finches at the hopper feeder.  :D 

EDIT 9/28/22 -- Today is cloudy and cool.  I fed the birds.  I watered the barrel garden and the container garden.

what is a fly-through feeder?

It's a tray with a roof over it. This is great for medium to large birds, and some ground-feeders (like doves) will use it who won't use a hopper or tube feeder. Mine looks similar to this:

aha! I think of those as just tray feeders or “house” feeders. I hadn’t heard the name fly-through. #til! :)

You got a Cardinal. I love those. We don't get those frequently, even once in awhile. Growing-up in Indiana we had them all the time.

We have many cardinals here. My yard is a mix of woodsy and open areas, which they love. I'd estimate at least a dozen pairs. Just walking around the yard I often see several cardinals flying around. In the winter, small flocks of them come to the feeders. :D

The male ones are so pretty.

I don't think I told you. The other day there was a family of the cutest ducks. I have no idea what kind they were. They were brown with orange beaks. There were two adults and a bunch of babies.

I enjoyed looking at all the ducks. I don't see the one I saw, but hopefully they'll come back at some point and I can look at them again. They weren't; really close. I stopped my car in the neighborhood street and looked at them, but that's as close as I got.

I hope they come back! It often takes more than one look to pin down a bird.

One thing that helps is knowing field marks, then you have a better idea what to look for. Body and beak color are two!
