Buy Nothing Day

Today is Buy Nothing Day

Here are some ways to celebrate it.  Especially apt:

* Barter instead of buying.

* Promote the gift economy.

* Start a GiveboxLittle Free Library, BookCrossing zone, or exchange shelf.

* Promote the right to repair.

* Learn how to fix things.

* Upcycle things.

* Create!

* Cook at home.

* Spend time with friends and family.

* Explore hobbies.

I might buy something today

I want to buy a crowd-sourced album and two collectables. I've been wanting to buy these things since last week. I hate to spend money. I hate buying things. Once I buy something, it's mine forever. I have a bag of books I did not like that I want to give to a used book store. They've been there, waiting, for at least 8 years. I haven't even bought groceries since last week. But I might buy something today. Maybe. Maybe not.

Will do. ^_^ I still have a week or so to join that crowd fund. The books requires I drive 100 miles round trip and remember to take the books before I leave the house.

I bought groceries day before yesterday...and promptly remembered the other reason I hate shopping on holidays: crowds!

I actually havent bought anything on Black Friday for...oh, years. (Ex-retail worker too, so I have a few amusing stories.)

But it is kinda hilarious when the early (4:30am) shoppers tell you the store isn't open 'til 5... so you can go "Oh, it's okay, I work here. See you in half an hour!"

...I like shopping during off hours.

I almost always cook at home, but I do need to buy ingredients. I cooked my usual feast, and now we're picking at the leftovers. And when our car got a flat tire as we were coming home from my having a kidney ultrasound scan in NYC on Friday, I helped swap it for the useless little "doughnut" spare that came with the car, and got us home by sheer force of will. (I know how to make, fix, and replace all sorts of things - I have found it necessary to teach myself an assortment of skills in my life.)

I know someone who always swaps the doughnut for a full-size tire. If finances and personal philosophy allow, that might be a useful lifehack for the future...

When we buy a replacement for the tire that got shredded we might buy an extra "real" tire to keep in the trunk.

I bought a Fire Tablet to hold up at the nursing home so bedridden Spouse can taste normality by looking at a favorite website.

If you don't mind well-wishes from an internet stranger; I hope things for y'all are going as well as can be expected.
