The Great Dying
... wiped out almost all ocean life, due to oxygen deprivation. This is fairly obvious to anyone who's ever had a bucket of minnows die on them during a warm day. It is also a concern due to the rapid warming of oceans today. If those die dead, we are deeply fucked.

They do. The catch is that they rarely have accountability. This invites abuse.

Yep.
When you factor in things like this, Drake's Equation makes a great deal more sense.

To paraphrase the observation: If we don't catch kids' interest in science by age ten, it's unlikely to EVER HAPPEN.
One of the writers of the original show said that the worst mistake Bill Nye made was giving Ken Ham the time of day.
In the video, though, you can SEE why Mr. Nye did so: it MATTERS to him that kids are being told provably false things as SCIENCE not THEOLOGY.

That's true of most things, really. You have until puberty. At that point, a lot of things that were malleable become set, and much harder to change afterwards. Very few great passions begin in adulthood.

Sadly, that happens with a lot of stuff. I very quickly reached the conclusion that school textbooks were unreliable as a category and nothing in them was to be considered true unless corroborated by several reliable outside sources.
