Demifiction: "What Normal Looks Like: Having Fun with Fruit Episode 1"

This is spillover from the November 6, 2018 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] technoshaman. It also fills the "good nutrition" square in my 2-28-18 card for the Slice of Life Bingo fest. This demifiction is the bonus material for the December 4, 2018 Poetry Fishbowl reaching its $300 goal. It belongs the series Polychrome Heroics, and is mentioned in the poem "When Circumstances Are at Their Worst" (not yet published).

Normal people eat plenty of fruit. Aim for at least two servings per day.

Fruit contains many things that support good health. These include vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and fiber.

The form of fruit matters. Fresh fruit is better than frozen fruit. Frozen fruit is better than canned fruit. Canned fruit is better than junk food. Preserved fruit loses some of its nutrients, but it is still good for you.

Playing with food is normal. Children and adults both do it. Most people play with their food in private, not in public.

However, food play appears in many party games, like bobbing for apples. Do what you love.

Playing with food is healthy. Children who play with their food learn to smell, taste, feel, and describe it. This encourages them to try new foods.

Some parents puree fruit to make edible finger paint. It's pretty and it tastes good, too! If you missed out on this while growing up, you can try it now.

Some crafts use fruit, such as making orange pomanders.

Fruit can also be cut into fun shapes. This makes a healthy food more appealing.

Most children love to cut up fruit. This way they learn practical life skills.

Some adults enjoy carving fruit into garnishes. Fruit carving is a fun and healthy hobby.

You can keep it simple ...

... or make it very complex.

There are classes in fruit carving. They teach techniques starting with simple ones and moving to complex ones.

If you don't like classes, you can look up tutorials online. There are picture, text, and video tutorials. They show how to use many different tools to carve fruit.

You can use a paring knife. This makes straight or curved cuts in any design you can imagine. It's good for carving fruit. However, it won't make a whole shape in one stroke.

You can use regular cookie cutters. These come in all shapes and sizes. They make a whole shape with one stroke. However, they won't hold many slices at the same time.

You can use a special fruit cutter. These cut out a whole shape at once and make it easy to stack pieces. However, they only come in a few styles.

You can make all kinds of things from fruit.

Make a face.

Make a train.

Make a flower.

Old MacDonald had a farm ...

Look, it's a squid!

Eat a rainbow.

Cut out a basket.

Build a house.

Bring a dinosaur to life.

Sail a pirate ship.

Visit a tropical island.

The only limitations are the kinds of fruit you can find ...

... and your imagination.

If it makes someone smile, it's a good thing.

Notes:

V'you is a video service similar to YouTube, owned by Kraken through many subsidiaries. Among its most popular channels is one called What Normal Looks Like, aimed at survivors of dysfunctional families. It features home movies and tutorials that help people learn what a healthy life is like and how to do stuff that most children learn growing up.

Dysfunctional families can go wrong in a lot of different ways. Adult children of dysfunctional families tend to develop similar traits as a result of their unfortunate childhood, such as the fact that they don't know what normal looks like. There are ways to overcome the maladaptive rules and recover from the toxic parenting. This page explores family dysfunctions and how to work through them.

Among other issues, dysfunctional families often lead to poor nutrition and/or disordered eating. That means adult children of dysfunctional families may need to develop a healthier relationship with food.

Shiv grew up in a lot of dysfunctional families, never quite getting enough to eat. He is doing better now. One thing he finds very helpful is watching videos, because he can replay them as often as he wants in order to learn something, in this case what to do with fruit.

Read about food games.

Make edible finger paint for babies. This is a good precursor to artistic finger paint.

Fruit carving classes can be lots of fun.

The links for dysfunctional families.. I LOOK like an adult child of a dysfunctional family, but it has entirely to do with my spiritual dissonance and personal identity, apparently. My family was pretty normal, if poor, until things finally broke down for me.
