Poem: "Strange Angels"

This poem was written outside the regular prompt calls. It fills the "cape(d)" square in my 5-1-24 card for the Superhero Bingo fest. It is posted as a gift to Anthony Barrette for Father's Day.

"Strange Angels"

Cicada nymphs
hang in the trees
like strange angels,

forelegs clasped
in quiet benediction,

their soft bodies pulsing
in the summer night

as their pale wings
slowly unfold.

They all look
so graceful as they
sway in the wind,

caped in white lace
with their ruby eyes
newly jeweled.

Everywhere is
the soft sound of
freshly found wings,

a whisper of
something sacred.

Notes:

Cicadas are insects that mature underground, then emerge in masses. In 2024, a brood of periodical cicadas emerged in Illinois among other places. This article shows several photos of emerging cicadas.

Oddly fitting for Fathers' Day, too.

Thanks for the link to look at the cicadas.

Something I doubt I'll experience unless I move to cicada country, so thanks for that as well.
