Rose-breasted Grosbeak

I saw a rose-breasted grosbeak on the hopper feeder.  I don't think I've seen one in summer before.  They usually appear in spring.  We had some for several weeks earlier.

* He may actually be staying in the yard, but hasn't come to the feeder since everything greened up.  Not sure why he would suddenly visit the feeder now, though.

* He may have gotten pushed out of his territory elsewhere, and be traveling in search of a new one.

Best of luck to the little creature! They look lovely in their beautiful hues. I've only seen photos.

I rescued a bat today that had flitted all night before coming to rest on the living room ceiling. A specially rigged pool scoop acted as a net to slap over it and when I slid in stiff paper between the creature and the ceiling, it squeaked many times before plopping into the net. It was the matter of a minute to make my way to the front yard and rest the scoop against the olive tree; upon returning 2 minutes later, it had flown. I'm pleased to be successful; 2 years ago, one flitted through the house and I couldn't keep track of it but only found it when I made up a bed a tenant had used and there it was, poor little thing dead of fright clinging to the sheets, smothered or something because not a mark was on it. I'm going to say today's bat was the usual in this part of the US, little brown bat. :)
