I hate academic events, so much small talk and it's painful. It's an entire room filled of scientists, you'd think we'd find something to talk about but it's all so impersonal.

It was even worse when I worked in the private sector. All the 'schmoozing' and fund-raising. It's one of the reasons I take my husband - his ice-breaker is a sledgehammer!
