Good News

Good news includes all the things which make us happy or otherwise feel good. It can be personal or public. We never know when something wonderful will happen, and when it does, most people want to share it with someone. It's disappointing when nobody is there to appreciate it. Happily, blogging allows us to share our joys and pat each other on the back.

What good news have you had recently? Are you anticipating any more?

Definitely! I haven't digested all of the election results, but if it holds true as a belweather for next year's election, it'll be interesting.

The progressives (mostly) won for the municipal elections here in Medford MA USA yesterday. And the xenophobes didn't.

Awesome to hear! Here's hoping Boston keeps shedding those days when desegregation caused riots up there.

A transgender woman has won a seat in Virginia's House of Delegates. Danica Roem defeated an incumbent who had sponsored a bill earlier this year that would have restricted which bathroom transgender people could use.

It's the first time someone who's said they were transgender has been elected to a state legislature.

(Link goes to an NPR report)

I like how that second paragraph is written: "First time someone who's said they were transgender," instead of just assuming everyone in the legislature up until now has been cis. Also, that she ran-- and won-- against a seasoned politician that staked his reputation on transphobia.

On a personal note, I hope to catch up on my NaNoWriMo word count, today.

That's awesome! I hadn't heard definitely that Danica had won, I knew the Dems had won the Gov and LT.

Attorney General, too.

(As of this morning, many of the legislature races were too close to call, and I haven't heard any more recent news. But there's a slim chance the majority flipped from Republican to Democrat) *fingers crossed*

I was happy to see that the news guy whose girlfriend was also a TV news reporter and murdered on-air, he was elected.  And he's not a straight dogmatic Dem.  I like it when people don't hew to the ticket and are willing to argue points.

Danica Roem was also a newspaper reporter, and used that as one of the credentials on which she ran -- that she knows how to vet information and present it clearly.

Unfortunately, in my district, all but one of the local Republicans down-ticket were running unopposed (all except Clerk of the Court).

But this is a good news post, so I'll save my worries for another day, and get back to my NaNoWriMo novel.

I read that about Danica today, that she was formerly a reporter.  I agree, I think that's a good qualification for an official.  So many either ignore facts or simply hew the party line without applying critical analysis.  I also like the bit of tid that she's the vocalist for a metal band!  I really dislike the fact that so many of our Federal elected officials are so predominately attorneys, we need more real people in Congress. Best of luck on your NaNoWriMo!  My wife is skipping it this year, she's got Yuletide to worry about. (meanwhile she's working on her World of Warcraft dailies)

Danica being a reporter warms the cockles of my heart, 'cause my mother went back to college when I was in college myself, and got her degree in journalism (this was back in 1990-91) and she worked for several different local town/city papers (this was when newspaper bankruptcies were first starting to happen all over). So I've had the chance to see, up close, exactly the kind of critical thinking reporters have to engage in.

Best of luck on your NaNoWriMo!

Thank you!! I wrote (According to NaNoWriMo's official counter) 3,002 words today.

Not quite up to my lifetime one-day record of 4,184 back in 2012... but that was when I could stay up past midnight, and so some of the previous day's words got smooshed into the total.

I had a Hard Conversation with my boss yesterday and it went well. \o/

NaNoTextRoleplay seems to be working well. I'm making words happen.

The woman who won the election for mayor of the city I live in just BURIED the horrible racist white dude who was running against her. It wasn't even close. That makes me SO happy.

I got a job! It'll only last in its current incarnation for maybe 3 months, but it might lead to a similar job at another area military base. It pays more than minimum wage, and though it doesn't start for a month, it pays weekly and will be just in time for the holidaze.

The interesting bit is that I didn't apply for it: they found my resume in a database looking for local talent. Interviewed on the phone, did a questionnaire, and they made the offer yesterday afternoon. Now LOTS of paperwork and a drugs test.

So quite happy. Not expecting more than that, it's enough.

I'll throw this in between the election news. How about a boy who had his skin replaced with stem cells to treat him for a disease?

It's like straight up sci-fi.
