I personally think that aikido would be a much better fit for him than karate, but canon supports karate and it's probably the most commonly taught martial art in America, so that makes sense. If you get a good sensei, then yes, karate comes with philosophy and an admonishment not to hurt people unnecessarily. Think about Mr. Miyagi in The Karate Kid and you can see the angle.
