It's kind of an easteregg for the deep readers: the fact that Kay knows things like "Tim has a hydrostatic skeleton" implies a thorough conversation that would logically have included smaller details. I always have to choose what to include and what to leave out, but I try to put in enough concrete details to suggest the boundaries.

One thing I aim for in this series is a higher-than-Treknobabble level of science. Yes, I bend the rules a little to reach a fun flavor of science fiction. But I also go out looking for actual bits of science that I can include, because those details and vocabulary words help carry the weight of the made-up stuff.
