Computer Issues

Yesterday after we got the computer set up, it worked fine, except for excessive popups.

Today, none of the programs look quite right.  So that's aggravating and exhausting, in some cases harder to read.  That's making everything take longer, and I'm getting less done.  >_<

Hopefully the issues can be fixed somehow, somewhen.

Maybe a change of system font and/or font size would help?

I don't think it's a font problem this time, although I have had sizing problems in the past. Some colors are wrong, some things are transparent or blurry where they shouldn't be, some are crawling, etc.

Did they upgrade something as well as fixing it?

They were just supposed to make it work like it did before. In fact, yesterday it did that. I don't know why it changed, or how to fix it -- and they aren't open on weekends, so we can't ask about it until Monday.

What I have now is, marginally, better than nothing. The programs run. It's just grating on my nerves to have even more popups and things crawling slowly across the screen instead of blinking into place.

The three things I can think of:
- broken adblocker software
- something got downloaded
- sluggish internet (if there are a lot of buffering signs)

Not terribly techy myself, so I don't have much useful advice on how to actually fix those things.

The popups are from software.

It's possible that a download caused the problem. The damn system worked fine yesterday.

It's not the internet. Parts of the programs are misbehaving, like when I try to search within a document and the search window crawls slowly across the screen instead of blinking into existence instantly.

I know 'legitimate' downloads will sometimes come with annoying helpy tutorials.

Another issue could be a download resetting custom settings (if there aren't custom settings for blocking popups, there should be).

Perhaps they accidentally turned on automatic software updates, and a whole bunch of previously working software "upgraded" itself overnight?

If that happened, it could be a major pain - many software suppliers make it impossible to downgrade.

Also, watch out for things that remove user customizations as part of their automatic "upgrade".

OTOH, the problems you describe seem too pervasive for this explanation - which is probably a good thing.
