Don't get me started on transportation. I live in a suburban town in New Jersey, a bit on the middle-class side, about 40 miles from midtown Manhattan. If I wanted to take public transit into the city, I'd have to call a taxi to take me to the bus stop to get to the train station. Once in NY, I'd have to go up and down long stairways inside Penn Station, and I'd have to use the subway (yet more stairs I can't manage with my cane), or else I'd go hail a taxi to get to my doctor's appointment. There's no place I want to go that I can get to by bus. When I was called for jury duty, I had to opt out because the earliest bus I could get arrived at the courthouse at 9:30 AM, but I had to be there by 8 AM. And my husband had to use the car to go to work.
I've been trying to buy my glasses from local businesses, but I can't find a style I can use (there are two opticians nearby - there used to be another one, where I've been getting my glasses since I moved here in 2005, but they retired and closed up the shop last year. Which is why I'm considering online glasses compainie - I'd expect them to have more variety of styles.
