Well, the specific aspect I was thinking of is that men (in general) cannot *conceive* of getting raped. getting them to *seriously* consider the possibility that a very big hammer.
And the barrier is almost as bad with respect to whites and cops. They can't believe that cops would treat *them* that way. So it's a big shock when they wind up on the wrong side of cops. And of course, for most, that isn't going to happen.
Heck, that's likely one of the reasons for the *huge* reaction in "the North" when those white civil rights workers were killed in Mississippi back in the 60s. Folks "expected" bad things to happen to "blacks" down there. Having them happen to *white* was a major shock.
Of course in the South, they weren't "whites" they were (as you said) "n*gg*r-lovers".
