The Poetry Fishbowl is now CLOSED.  Thank you for your time and attention.  Please keep an eye on this page as I am still writing.

Starting now, the Poetry Fishbowl is open!  Today's theme is "Unconventional Living Arrangements."  I will be checking this page periodically throughout the day. When people make suggestions, I'll pick some and weave them together into a poem ... and then another ... and so on. I'm hoping to get a lot of ideas and a lot of poems.

I'll be soliciting ideas for families, polycules, housemates, roommates, landlords, nomads, loners, hermits, humans adopted by animals, animals that sometimes adopt humans, alien or fantasy species with different group dynamics than humans, superheroes, supervillains, social engineers, urban planners, failure analysts, ethicists, activists, diverse teams, rebels, wild young things, other people who live differently, moving out, moving in, living together, picking fights, making friends, solving disputes, troubleshooting, improvising, adapting, social engineering, making changes, cooperating, bartering, speaking, listening, taking over in an emergency, discovering yourself, studying others, testing boundaries, creating connections, coming of age, learning what you can (and can't) do, sharing, fixing what's broke, upsetting the status quo, changing the world, accomplishing the impossible, recovering from setbacks, returning home, traditional ethnic structures, alternative building styles, houses, sharehouses, boarding houses, tiny houses, roundhouses, trailers and trailer parks, multigenerational homes, apartments and complexes, multiplexes, intentional communities, cohousing, recreational vehicles, caravans, yurts and other tents, tent cities, homeless shelters, nonhuman accommodations and adaptations, wilderness, rural areas, supervillain lairs, living ships or other residences, fantasy worlds, alien planets, fantasy or alien housing styles, other places where people live, house rules, negotiation, mediation, cooperation, enemies to friends, enemies to lovers, truces in improbable contexts, unexpected bonds, symbiosis, polyamory, sedoretu, innovation, problems that can't be solved by hitting, teamwork, found family, intentional neighboring, complementary strengths and weaknesses, independence, interdependence, values conflict, solitude, personal growth, and poetic forms in particular.

Among my more relevant series for the main theme:

An Army of One features mostly reclaimed living quarters in space, and more solitary or communal living than typical family groups.

Beneath the Family Tree is a community of three different hominid species.

A Conflagration of Dragons has the Six Races plus the dragons, which means lots of people living in places they never intended.

Feathered Nests has the alien Fifers whose polyamorous arrangements are spilling over to humans.

Frankenstein's Family includes humans, werewolves, vampires, a mummy, and two doctors in all sorts of arrangements.

The Godship Wanderers has a living ship with alien and human residents.

Hart's Farm is a free-love community.

Monster House has human inhabitants plus a bunch of different monsters.

Not Quite Kansas has humans and demons living together in unexpected ways.

Path of the Paladins includes traveling paladins and various other combinations.

Polychrome Heroics has ordinary humans, supernaries, blue-plate specials, superheroes, supervillains, primal and animals soups trying to live as best they can. This society has great variety of building styles, social ties, and living arrangements. Most of the named threads suit this theme.

Or you can ask for something new.

I have a linkback poem, "Pumpkin Spice Prosperity" (11 verses, Polychrome Heroics).

What Is a Poetry Fishbowl?

Writing is usually considered a solitary pursuit. One exception to this is a fascinating exercise called a "fishbowl." This has various forms, but all of them basically involve some kind of writing in public, usually with interaction between author and audience. A famous example is Harlan Ellison's series of "stories under glass" in which he sits in a bookstore window and writes a new story based on an idea that someone gives him. Writing classes sometimes include a version where students watch each other write, often with students calling out suggestions which are chalked up on the blackboard for those writing to use as inspiration.

In this online version of a Poetry Fishbowl, I begin by setting a theme; today's theme is "Unconventional Living Arrangements."  I invite people to suggest characters, settings, and other things relating to that theme. Then I use those prompts as inspiration for writing poems.

Cyberfunded Creativity

I'm practicing cyberfunded creativity. If you enjoy what I'm doing and want to see more of it, please feed the Bard. The following options are currently available:

1) Sponsor the Fishbowl -- Here is a PayPal button for donations. There is no specific requirement, but $1 is the minimum recommended size for PayPal transactions since they take a cut from every one. You can also donate via check or money order sent by postal mail. If you make a donation and tell me about it, I promise to use one of your prompts. Anonymous donations are perfectly welcome, just won't get that perk. General donations will be tallied, and at the end of the fishbowl I’ll post a list of eligible poems based on the total funding; then the audience can vote on which they want to see posted.

2) Swim, Fishie, Swim! -- A feature in conjunction with fishbowl sponsorship is this progress meter showing the amount donated.  There are multiple perks, the top one being a half-price poetry sale on one series when donations reach $300.

3) Buy It Now! -- Gakked from various e-auction sites, this feature allows you to sponsor a specific poem. If you don't want to wait for some editor to buy and publish my poem so you can read it, well, now you don't have to. Sponsoring a poem means that I will immediately post it on my blog for everyone to see, with the name of the sponsor (or another dedicate) if you wish; plus you get a nonexclusive publication right, so you can post it on your own blog or elsewhere as long as you keep the credits intact. You'll need to tell me the title of the poem you want to sponsor. I'm basing the prices on length, and they're comparable to what I typically make selling poetry to magazines (semi-pro rates according to Duotrope's Digest).

0-10 lines: $5
11-25 lines: $10
26-40 lines: $15
41-60 lines: $20
Poems over 60 lines, or with very intricate structure, fall into custom pricing.

4) Commission a scrapbook page. I can render a chosen poem in hardcopy format, on colorful paper, using archival materials for background and any embellishments. This will be suitable for framing or for adding to a scrapbook. Commission details are here.  See latest photos of sample scrapbooked poems: "Sample Scrapbooked Poems 1-24-11"

5) Spread the word. Echo or link to this post on your Dreamwidth, other blog, Twitter, Facebook, Digg, StumbleUpon, or any other social network.  Useful Twitter hashtags include #poetryfishbowl and #promptcall.  Encourage people to come here and participate in the fishbowl.  If you have room for it, including your own prompt will give your readers an idea of what the prompts should look like; ideally, update later to include the thumbnail of the poem I write, and a link to the poem if it gets published.  If there is at least one new prompter or donor, I will post an extra freebie poem.

Linkback perk: I have a spare series poem available, and each linkback will reveal a verse of the poem.  One person can do multiple links if they're on different services, like Dreamwidth or Twitter, rather than all on LiveJournal.  Comment with a link to where you posted. "Pumpkin Spice Prosperity" has 11 verses and belongs to Polychrome Heroics.

Additional Notes

1) I customarily post replies to prompt posts telling people which of their prompts I'm using, with a brief description of the resulting poem(s). If you want to know what's available, watch for those "thumbnails."

2) You don't have to pay me to see a poem based on a prompt that you gave me. I try to send copies of poems to people, mostly using the LJ message function.  (Anonymous prompters will miss this perk unless you give me your eddress.)  These are for-your-eyes-only, though, not for sharing.

3) Sponsors of the Poetry Fishbowl in general, or of specific poems, will gain access to an extra post in appreciation of their generosity.  While you're on the Donors list, you can view all of the custom-locked posts in that category.  Click the "donors" tag to read the archive of those.  I've also posted a list of other donor perks there.  I customarily leave donor names on the list for two months, so you'll get to see the perk-post from this month and next.

4) After the Poetry Fishbowl concludes, I will post a list of unsold poems and their prices, to make it easier for folks to see what they might want to sponsor.

5) If donations total $100 by Friday evening then you get a free $15 poem; $150 gets you a free $20 poem; and $200 gets you a free epic, posted after the Poetry Fishbowl.  These will usually be series poems if I have them; otherwise I may offer non-series poems or series poems in a different size.  If donations reach $250, you get one step toward a bonus fishbowl; four of these activates the perk, and they don't have to be four months in a row.  Everyone will get to vote on which series, and give prompts during the extra fishbowl, although it may be a half-day rather than a whole day.  If donations reach $300, you get a piece of bonus material.

Feed the Fish!
Now's your chance to participate in the creative process by posting ideas for me to write about. Today's theme is "Unconventional Living Arrangements."  See above for details.  If you manage to recommend a form that I don't recognize, I will probably pounce on it and ask you for its rules. I do have The New Book of Forms by Lewis Turco which covers most common and many obscure forms.

I'll post at least one of the fishbowl poems here so you-all can enjoy it. (Remember, you get an extra freebie poem if someone new posts a prompt or makes a donation, and additional perks at $100-$300 in donations.  Linkbacks reveal verses of "Pumpkin Spice Prosperity."  The rest of the poems will go into my archive for future use.

How many people in Terramagne secede from civilization?

Or secede from /humanity/, even or especially if still human-shaped? Examples:

- (lions, warning for wild carnivores eating, but includes a great discussion of boundaries & cross-culturalspecies relations) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jenVMnOi2uA

- (gorillas, can skip to 1:20) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_X57lHbQP6k

Officer Pink: How are Turq, Ansel and Janie doing? Are there still slight growing pains or have they adjusted to their living arrangement?

Damask: And also how are Damask doing within themselves? Does everyone understand Keane's coping techniques yet?

Not Quite Kansas: How did Gideon and Raymond adjust to living together?

Love Is for Children: Has Loki got on any better with the Avengers or are there still teething problems - as it were.

And all my prompts are basically the same question for different series. Oh well.

You know, technically, /Thor/ is a different species than Loki and the rest of the Avengers - I wonder how likely it is that he might react badly to something that does not affect humans/jotunn? And how he'd react to that?

Also, maybe they could ask Jarvis to 'be voice' for everyone if Bucky gets his languages stuck again. (With sufficient prep, Jarvis might even be able to 'dub' people /with sound clips from their actual voices/.) (Jarvis would be an awesome language tutor...)

Ricasso has some rather unconventional living arrangements, what with moving the gang around all the time. How does this affect the gang members? What about if Ricasso or one of the others wants to bring someone back for the night? Is there a protocol for that? Special precautions? What if one of them ended up in a serious relationship and wanted share living space with their companion?

*Any of the rescued bots liberated on the day Heron was working the chat search, settling in in their new locations. We've glimpsed Niu Le, and her found family and new home could count as unconventional in themselves, but aside from Qin Yuán, we don't know where or how the others landed, do we?

*The newly-formed Kraken team including Sluice, Pumps, Dauber and Slither, starting to share a suite. How's that going? It can't all be spectacular, but I'm hoping it isn't all craptastic either?

*Anything more about Bexley and Cruiser Falconwing. They definitely qualify as unconventional family, and I suppose some would consider shipboard life unusual, but I get the idea that neither of these two would agree.

*Circling back to Terramagne, Tyria's living arrangements as of Turq reconnecting with her definitely qualify as unconventional, considering she's a mostly outdoor cat much of the time. Is she still living near the restaurant? Have she and Chulli (and what about Chulli's husband, now that I think about him) become friends as people now that Chulli knows Tyria's not simply an unusually-colored cat? ... Has Tyria gotten that phone with games for cats downloaded onto it yet? XD

Prompts: A commune that doesn't live in the same house/location. A poly triad juggling three times the career logistics. Moving back in with parents/relatives and SUCCEEDING at the relevant adjustments. Pips and the comfort of something being just the right temperature.

Oof, that poly one is too realistic. It can be SUCH a hassle to balance everyone's schedules, but it's honestly worth it.

What I'd really love finding for my next place to live: a multigenerational QUILTBAG-friendly intentional community. A place where I can look out for others without it seeming like prying, and have others look out for me because that's what the community does.

Somewhere in here, Kenzie is going to chafe at his current setup. It seems he's got a goal of gaining tribal membership -- which will probably roughly coincide with his working out what sort of contribution to the community he feels drawn to. And will likely wind up affecting how he wants to live in the community.

Speaking of the Iron Horses, is there a network of people they can stay with if they're away from home and sleeping rough isn't in their plans?

In a similar vein, what do Menachem and Yossele do as they travel? Does anyone put them up for the night? What does their Sabbath look like, even though Menachem does not follow tradition and "turn off" Yossele for the day, even though they both honor it as a day of rest?

I am a new person, and would like to provide a prompt: Boss White dealing with the city government about his buildings and the people within in some way. Maybe a gas leak requires an evacuation and fixing? I really like the character dynamics of the Ebonies and Ivories, so bonus for me if that is included.

Oh, seconding this! And mix-use building have some unique challenges, which is why L-America largely doesn't do that, but it'd be interesting to see Boss White tackle something like a possible bedbug infestation in a building that ALSO houses a restaurant.

Slightly long idea...I know Thalassia started as a landless state run by supervillans, and they're fond of Klingon... What about other affinity groups who might try to form up into a state?

- I could imagine a women's nation-state forming out of several women's groups and being fond of Laadan.* Such a group would likely be very diverse, and might include non-women allies in some cells. And I don't think I've seen it written like that - like growing vines going over the rest of the world (sorry, being wierdly metaphorical...)
*(first world activists, battered women's underground railroad conductors, the girl gangs from India, the lady militia's and park rangers in Africa, martial-arts grandma's, blue-collar supervillainesses, ethical back-alley abortionists, prostitute's labor unions, Catholic nunneries, the former sexbots...)

- Could be done for other affinity groups as well (autism & other disabilities, LGBTQIA+, an unpopular religion, a different species like the robots or whales... anyone who feels like living in mainstream is like living in the wrong culture.)

- Actually, the more I think about the different species-nation idea the more I like it. I don't think I've /ever/ seen that done as a way to obtain/insist on legal personhood. How are those aliens in Antarctica doing? Should gorillas in the Congo or river dolphins be counted as a nation like the Cherokee/Apache? If there are cultural divisions in the group, is that causing another colonialist problem? (Is there even a word for that? Colonialism is to culture as X is to species?)

Specifically, what is the queer subculture in A Brother's Price like, either in their vaguely-1800's time, or their version of the 1960's and Stonewall? Other subcultures?

More randomly: the monogamists, purely gay folks, trans folks (especially the guys), guys who /don't/ want to marry, illegal contraceptives, restrictions on contraceptives, (are vasectomies a thing in this world? they'd be seen as bad as abortion in ours, I bet). What goes on in the cribs when they aren't open for business, is there an underground railroad to get people out of the sex slave thing, what happens to all the orphans, how does being 'in service' work, do boys ever get disguised as girls for access to rights/safety, how do exclusively men's spaces work in that world, what are other parts of the world like, how does racism and genocide (it is set in the Americas) shake out differently when half-blooded children are better than none at all...?

Polychrome Heroics - the early days of one of the college share houses, like Maisie's/Damask's living arrangements. It's not a sorority, but they all seem to do pretty well, unlike Heron's earlier living arrangements.

Multiculturalism in the family/community saves your ass. Also, living in the liminal zones - poverty, cultural, nationalism, city-vs-country. Cosmopolitan social networks allowing you to hand off problems to qualified people you both respect, and can respectfully disagree with. (We need more of that in this culture.)

What are Judd's living arrangements? He has the physical needs of a horse in terms of space, food, someone with opposable thumbs for certain tasks, but companionship and social needs that are both those of a herd animal and those of an intelligent person (which other horses cannot meet). We see him visiting here and there with Alicia, but where is he when he's home, and how do his friends try to meet his more unique needs?

And I seem to recall that when introduced to Ansel's grandfather's draft horses, Judd and the mare had quite a good time. Is there a foal from that? And if so, is the foal a fairly normal baby equine, or did some of Judd's special characteristics get passed down?

Dogs and horses living together are not an unusual living arrangement, but is there a soup dog that might be good stable company for Judd?

How about an artist's colony that accommodates multiple species?

How does Terramagne handle migrant workers and other modern-day nomads?

Sensible cross-cultural refugee camps in A Conflageration Of Dragons.

Also, do they have religious minimalists in that world? A minimalist monastary that actually /follows/ those rules likely wouldn't attract dragons...but might get a bunch of refugees.

I found a company that makes some delightfully Terramagne-esque houses, Green Magic Homes. (https://greenmagichomes.com/) I'd love to see something about them in T-America, perhaps a whole subdivision or planned neighborhood using them, designed for best community cohesion and function. (They also make greenhouses/agrobuildings for aeroponics and bunker-like structures I think look like the bolthole we saw in Barrettaflies, where the retired villain took in the family?)

I'm also interested in large polycules living together, but in direct contrast to a mono-normative world. (Hart's Farm is lovely but feels too distant sometimes,I'd like to see a house in a neighborhood or an apartment building that got slowly bought up by the 'cule until it was just their house.)

What about "alien or fantasy species with different group dynamics than humans," but with a mixed human-alien or human-many-alien-species group? Kind of like a multicultural clan, but up to eleven. (I've seen a handful of examples, but they're usually individual relationships or 'cultural conversion to species x,' not a group with roughly even mixed demographics...)
