Poem: "The Mixture of Spices, the Subtle Flavors"

This poem is spillover from the December 3, 2020 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from [livejournal.com profile] my_partner_doug. It also fills the "Garlic" square in my 9-5-18 "Spices" card for the 1000 Words or Less Bingo fest. This poem was sponsored by a pool with [personal profile] fuzzyred[personal profile] ng_moonmoth, and [personal profile] mama_kestrel.  It belongs to the Pain's Gray and Shiv threads of the Polychrome Heroics series.

"The Mixture of Spices, the Subtle Flavors"

[Friday, June 5, 2015]

Pain's Gray kept an eye
on Shiv as they flanked
Ricasso a pace behind him,
but the kid was actually good
at this and stayed right where
he was supposed to be.

They were meeting with
a couple of Indians today,
because Ricasso hoped he
could make an alliance
with their little gang.

When they turned
into the parking lot of
Ganesh Indian Cuisine,
Pain's Gray spotted
the Indians waiting.

The older one was
taller and stronger,
clearly the muscle.

His boss was short and
slim with a direct gaze. He
stepped forward and said,
"Welcome to Little India. I'm
Ajay Ganjoo of the Akarya,
and this is Balwinder."

"I'm Ricasso of
the Spadonari,"
he said. "These
are my men, Shiv
and Pain's Gray."

The bosses shook
hands, and something
flittered over the group,
a hint of Empathy perhaps.

Pain's Gray dipped his chin
just enough to let his eyes
show over his sunglasses
and send a spark in return.

Ajay just chuckled and
smirked instead of protesting,
and Balwinder didn't budge.

"Come, we can talk over lunch,"
said Ajay. "The buffet is quite good."

It smelled promising, at least.

They had to go through the door
single file, and Pain's Gray
promptly ran into Shiv.

"Hey," he said mildly,
"don't block the door."

Then the smell hit him
and Pain's Gray could
tell why the boy had
stopped in his tracks.

It smelled like a spice rack
had exploded, with all kinds
of creamy and savory notes
mellowing the sharpness.

Shiv's nose twitched,
like a cat scenting tuna.

He had a tendency to zone
on strong sensory input.

Pain's Gray put a hand
between his shoulderblades
and gently urged the boy
to follow their boss.

It only took a minute for
them to claim a table and
order the buffet, although Ajay
added a few other items to share.

Then Pain's Gray followed
him to the buffet area.

To his surprise, the Indians
offered quiet advice instead of
leaving them to their own devices
as some sort of perverse test.

"All the chicken dishes are
flavorful but not too spicy,"
Ajay said. "Use naan bread
or rice to soak up the sauces."

"Don't touch the vindaloo
unless you enjoy pain,"
Balwinder added.

Shiv and Pain's Gray
tangled together as
both of them reached
for that at the same time.

Both of them also took
some tandoori chicken
to be safe. Pain's Gray
added shrimp in curry sauce,
and Shiv inevitably went
for the fish curry too.

"Dal is beans, and
bhindi is okra," said Ajay.

Pain's Gray took dabs of
the different bean dishes.
Shiv loaded up on okra.
Both of them took what
looked like vegetables
in some sort of sauce.

"Hey, look!" said Shiv.
"This stuff has whole eggs
in it, hard-boiled ones."

"That's egg curry,"
Ajay said helpfully.

As soon as Shiv was
done bailing out an egg,
Pain's Gray got one himself.

Ricasso, who had learned from
snitching spicy things that Pain's Gray
made, stuck with tandoori chicken,
vegetable curry, naan and rice.

The salad bar was literally
overflowing with sauces,
a whole row of stuff on
the counter where you
were supposed to put
your plate to load it.

Behind that, Pain's Gray
could see lemon wedges,
green chilis, sliced onions,
more sauces, two salads,
pineapple, mango, watermelon,
tomatoes, unfamiliar pastries,
and what looked like a pot full of
donut holes swimming in syrup.

Pain's Gray took a sample of
each salad along with dribbles
of the different sauces to explore.

Shiv predictably grabbed the fruit.

Ricasso took the most familiar salad
but picked up one of the pastries.

Pain's Gray swallowed hard.
His mouth was watering.

Soon they sat down at
the table, and both of
the Indians began to eat.

Pain's Gray and Shiv
waited for Ricasso's signal
before they dug in. Apparently
everyone was being friendly today.

That meant they could enjoy
the meal instead of devoting
all their attention to watching
for possible signs of trouble.

That was good, because
the food was amazing.

Pain's Gray had never
tasted anything like it,
and he had explored
a lot of different foods.

"What even is this?"
Shiv said with his mouth
full. "Tastes like ... garlic?
Ginger and pepper?
I dunno what else."

"Well, there's cayenne in
the tandoori chicken to turn it
so red," said Pain's Gray.

"Yeah, okay," Shiv said.
"What about the fish?
Why's it sort of yellow?"

"I don't know, I didn't get
any of that," said Pain's Gray.

"Here, try some of mine."
Shiv forked over a bit of it.

Pain's Gray tasted the fish.
"Turmeric, maybe," he said.

"Yeah, but the rice on the table
is yellow and that doesn't taste
the same as the fish," Shiv said.

"The rice has saffron in it,"
said Pain's Gray. "The fish curry
has turmeric and I don't know what else."

"I like the yellow rice," Shiv said.
"It almost tastes like flowers."

"Saffron is a flower, or part
of one," said Pain's Gray.
"Those little orange threads
are the stamens of a crocus."

"Weird," Shiv said. "Good though."

"Try the shrimp in curry sauce,
you like shrimp," said Pain's Gray,
moving some to Shiv's plate.

Shiv sampled the shrimp,
then licked his lips. "Is that ...
coconut?" he wondered.

"I think so too," said Pain's Gray.
"I've had Thai curry with coconut,
but it wasn't nearly as good as this."

"Nothing is as good as Indian food,"
Ajay said with a fond smirk.

Shiv poked at his plate some more,
then challenged Pain's Gray,
"Dare you to try the hot stuff."

Pain's Gray took a bite
of the lamb vindaloo
and almost choked.

It felt like the sauce
was melting his lips off,
but he held out as long as
he could in order to take
an imprint before he
grabbed the yogurt.

Shiv was already drinking
the white sauce out of a bowl.

Pain's Gray reached under
the table to tap him on the ankle,
and Shiv put down the bowl.

"Good lamb," the kid wheezed.

Balwinder laughed and clapped him
on the shoulder. "You've got guts."

And damn if Shiv didn't pick up
a piece of the naan and mop
the vindaloo sauce off his plate.

"It's not as bad with something else
to dilute the heat," Shiv said.

"That's what the naan and rice
are for," Balwinder agreed.

Their bosses worked as
they ate, talking through
what each had to offer.

Ricasso had more muscle,
while Ajay had connections
throughout Little India.

Both of them preferred
cons to rougher methods.

"See now, you want to reach
the doctors and lawyers in
Farmington Hills," Ajay said.
"I can get your foot in the door."

"Why not just take them yourself?"
Ricasso wondered as he used
his powers to shave the meat
off of the chicken bones.

Ajay scratched behind his ear.
"If someone gets upset and calls
security, I don't have much backup,"
he admitted. "Balwinder here has
the only combat talent in the gang."

"We have plenty of that," Ricasso said.

Shiv wriggled in his seat, and Pain's Gray
gave him another discreet little tap.
That settled him back down.

"We could make a trial run,"
Ajay said. "There's a big gala
planned for the Fourth of July --
immigrants hoping to impress locals."

"I'm listening," Ricasso said, and
Ajay sketched out the bones of what
sounded like a pretty good plan.

"Is there dessert?" Shiv whispered.

"I'm sure there is," said Pain's Gray.
"Be patient and let them finish."

Shiv managed to sit still until
the bosses got done with Business.

"It's a deal," Ricasso said, and
the two of them shook on it.
"I look forward to working
with you and your men."

When Ajay offered a hand to
Pain's Gray, it was unexpected,
but not a threat to refuse.

When they touched,
Ajay's Empathy riffled
over the edges of his mind.

It was warm and rich and ...
complicated, Pain's Gray
decided, like the spices
layered in the food.

He liked the feel of it,
so he answered with
the spangling dance of
energy that some people
enjoyed in the bedroom.

Ajay jumped a little,
then flashed a grin.

Pain's Gray watched as
he shook hands with Shiv.

The boy's hand flexed, not
enough to cut, just to show
Ajay the sharp slivers that
Shiv kept under his nails.

"You've got good muscle,"
Ajay said to Ricasso.

The boss and Balwinder
were still holding hands,
testing each other a little.

Balwinder shifted in place
and a tattoo peeked out
from under his shirtsleeve
as he let go of Ricasso's hand.

"This is going to be so much fun,"
Ricasso said with a soft laugh.

Pain's Gray wondered if there
would be any play involved
or if it was just Business, but
now wasn't the time to ask.

"Dessert?" he said instead.
"The food is incredible, and I'm
curious about the grand finale."

"Gulab jamun in the pot or
besan barfi on the plate,"
said Balwinder. "They're
both very sweet things."

"This?" Ricasso said,
holding up a diamond shape.
"I think it has nuts in it."

"That's the besan barfi,"
said Balwinder. "Gulab jamun
are shaped like little balls
flavored with rosewater."

"I'm getting some," Shiv said,
bolting from the table. That boy
would eat anything tasting like flowers.

Ajay just laughed. "I love Indian food --
it's my favorite cuisine. I love the mixture
of spices and the subtle flavors. It's
really erotic; the spices are so sensuous."

Oh yes. Play was definitely on the table.

Pain's Gray gave Ajay an appraising glance
and smiled. The young boss was handsome,
strong enough to be fun. Maybe he knew
some of the empathic tricks that Pain's Gray
had only heard salacious rumors about.

It was up to the one with higher rank
to make the first move, though.

"See something you like?"
Ajay said, raising an eyebrow.

"I admire people who appreciate
good food," said Pain's Gray.
"It can get so ... complicated,
and not everyone likes it spicy."

Shiv came back with dessert,
then, and for a wonder he had
brought bowls for Pain's Gray
and Ricasso as well as himself.

Gulab jamun tasted of honey
and spices, intensely sweet
with floral and nutty notes.

At least Shiv devoured
his with a spoon instead of
drinking out of the bowl again.

Pain's Gray didn't know who
had utterly failed to teach him
table manners, but he wished
he could find them and give them
a brisk smack with his superpowers.

"Thank you for introducing us to
this restaurant," Shiv said. "I
like the food. Kinda reminds
me of Maldivian cuisine, but
not quite so much fish in it?"

For all his rough background,
Shiv spent enough time with
the Finns to have a wider reach,
which was easy to forget.

"I think they're related,"
said Pain's Gray. "India
is right next to the Maldives."

"Oh yeah," Shiv agreed. "I
remember Aida saying that."

"Sometimes our neighbors
give us the best insights,"
Ricasso said, smiling.

Thinking about lunch,
Pain's Gray had to agree.

He couldn't wait to get home and
explore Indian food in his own kitchen.

He wanted to go down on the subtle flavors.

....did Ricasso go to Blues Moon??? Did I miss a poem? Where are we, where is Shiv, how did this happen?

Also, is there Hawt? It looks like there's going to be Hawt?

Is the trading muscle poem out or written?

I feel like Shiv might rub Ricasso the wrong way. Ricasso runs a very VERY slick and smooth operation...and Shiv....isn't.

Also heck yeah Hawt diversity!!

In his element, Shiv is nimble as a cat and smooth as an otter.

This is true, but we're only just seeing him come in to confidence with his element...

I dunno I guess it depends on where he's at when this happens

The bear shifts to a digital cat, who sidles up and *marks* the above post...

No idea where that came from, it just _is_...

...I don't know how to navigate this spaghetti tangle of a page....is that an intentional choice to mimic how the Heroes interact with the Tef?

I like how Shiv flexes his claws.
