I don't know why either. I've seen it on a number of blogs, not common, but not a one-time thing. My suspicion is that it's a frame failure: the blog should be displaying things wider than it is. This is a different issue than when a long thread has so many indents that the later comments turn into weird tall columns. You could ask around -- someone else may know why this happens and how to fix it.
