1) I didn't know how much time Shiv would want to put into chain mail at first. You do keep saying lazy little f. :-p a) I can see how the first time would be repairing a Finn's gear. b) I have watched chain mail being made, by friends, as we watch a movie at their place. Even having a box of open rings, so sharp edges cut from wire by Tolliver maybe, would probably speed things up for Shiv to assemble.
a) My friends, one does armor mail, and the other jewelry mail. http://chainmail101.com/chainmail-pattern-tutorials I think Shiv could learn the patterns just by flowing a piece someone else had made already.
b) I don't see a difference between the metalwork composition and souped up quality between Shiv flowing and hardening someone else's butted work piece, or having him do ALL of that prep work himself. I liked his quick and dirty Damascus fork and knife machete in prison to stop the chayne.
3) Oh, that's an issue: chayne vs. chain. Would it flip Shiv out, just the nomenclature?
4) What I would beg and deal with Shiv for wouldn't be chain mail, but just enough scales for scale mail, shirt and leggings. Can you imagine as someone like me more accustomed to dealing with fabric, having the metal scales prepunched and ROUNDED so the holes don't wear your attachment method through quickly, a lá Shiv's shoehole grommet trick reversed? :-D This is the type of store for supplies like that here: http://theringlord.com/cart/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=208. If he's feels icky about making knives, he could make lots of money off art level this stuff!
Can someone grab @siliconshaman here? I'm more wanna be hobby tinsmith for candle reflectors, not up to this. I need extra help with safety gear.

2) Besides cutting the wire, and twisting it into rings, making the weaves of chain mail might work more for him much like knitting yarn to knit chin mail as a moving meditation idea. https://metalsmithing.wonderhowto.com/how-to/make-chain-mail-armor-from-start-finish-0118499/
