Poem: "When They're Not Around"

This poem came out of the May 15, 2018 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by prompts from [personal profile] ng_moonmoth and [personal profile] jtthomas. It also fills the "monster" square in my 5-1-18 Roles card for the Pro Wrestling Bingo Fest. This poem has been sponsored by [personal profile] janetmiles.

"When They're Not Around"

Everything has a home
and a job in this world ...
and sometimes in others.

The gremlins that chew on
clothes in the washing machine
go home to their hollow hill
whenever it's empty.

The fairies that flit among
the houseplants and prisms in
the bay window are the same as
those who chase butterflies outside.

The trolls that chase cars are
always nearby, but sometimes they're
on the road and other times under the bridge.

They have their own friends and families,
just like any other creatures, and they
go about business and pleasure
here and there as they will.

When we think of them as monsters,
we forget to wonder what they're up to
when they're not around, but

life is better with a little wonder in it.

Indeed they are under the bridge. [personal profile] pocketnaomi and I have an ongoing joke-argument as to whether the troll got too far out from under his bridge during daytime (her side) in nabbing the Beetle, or whether it was the iron in the Bug's body that got him (my idea, based on [personal profile] annathepiper's opening of Faerie Blood...

Either way, proof positive that trolls really do live under bridges.

The Fremont Troll is a required destination if guests of mine are going to be in Seattle any length of time. It's just one of those geeky destinations that Ya Gotta Do... kinda like Platform 9.3/4 at King's Cross in London, or Bletchley Park, or Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, or Riverside, Iowa...
