Mmm, I fear this happens an awful lot, particularly historically but very much still now. Can remember how long it took me and my husband to convince my mother's neighbour that no, she's far from stupid (or even stupid with English). She's dyslexic and left-handed (a common combination) and in the 1960s that meant endlessly being told she was stupid and getting shoved in the corner of the classroom instead of being taught home ecc with everyone else because the teachers couldn't be bothered to try to figure out how to teach a lefty. So, in her life she taught herself spinning, knitting, crochet and embroidery (including how to read patterns), figured out how to teach those crafts to right-handed people as a lefty, stopped entering the jam and wine competitions at the local country fairs because "I always won and it was getting embarassing", writes beautiful poetry and is better at sudoku and jigsaw puzzles than most anyone I know. Yeah, stupid my ass.
