>> It's great to see Shiv getting VALIDATION from a stranger! <<
Yes, he needs that. I think, now that Shiv is getting around more, he's broken out of that odd little eddy and can see more of what's typical for T-America. It's strange to him, but he kinda likes it.
>> Her teaching style makes me want to attend, dragging my skills up to meet the info on the whiteboards! <<
Yeah, me too. I'm not good with numbers, but I do better with geometry. I'd love those ruffles. Even though I can't crochet, I admire the skills.
>> But the most interesting line, that made my brain go back again and again to chew over, was: He rarely stole from the Little Free Libraries.
That implies that Shiv differentiates between /following the swap rule/, and JUST taking a book. <<
Huh. I got the impression that he wasn't taking anything out of them, and couldn't tell the difference between stealing things that weren't supposed to be taken and taking things put there for that purpose.
>> He's far from stupid, <<
This is true. It's just starting to peek out, but he's a sharp little tack under the mountain of bad tape in his head.
>>and more of his former fosters need to be kicked to Saturn for the damage they've done. His teachers deserve worse.
Dump them in local-Kansas?
>> He's also not nearly as asocial as he thinks <<
This is probably true. Yes, he's an introvert with a limited tolerance for people -- but mostly it's that he has a very low bullshit tolerance. Put him with assholes and he acts like he hates people. Certainly his ability to relate to others is damaged by years of abuse. But put him with decent people and he starts to perk up a bit. It's possible to get him excited, even get him engaged in a group effort. He's not much attracted to people, but he can be fascinating by things, and anyone willing to relate based on a common interest like crochet or smithcraft has a chance.
One of the best things that has happened to Shiv is that he's picking up a whole bunch of hobbies, mostly clustered around visual and tactile themes. Artwork. Metalcraft. Glassworking. Cooking. Music. Crochet. Even fishing is a whole-body activity that ties in with his long-ago curiosity about the wilderness. He has things to do that help him relax and express ideas. It taps off the pressure.
