This poem is spillover from the January 2, 2018 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] chanter_greenie. It also fills the "water" square in my 1-1-18 card for the Apocalypse Bingo fest, and the "dragons" square in my 10-1-17 card for the Fall Festival Bingo. This poem has been sponsored by [personal profile] zianuray. It belongs to the series Monster House.

"The Dragon and the Manticore"

I like to walk down to
the park on weekends.

There's a portal in
the shallows of the lake,
and another in the alleyway.

The water dragon who
hangs around the dock
is friendly, and gives
good advice on fishing,
so long as you do not
cast a line in her direction.

The alleycat who likes
the dumpster between
Pearl's Pizza and Big Al's
is actually an alley manticore,
and he's a little temperamental.

They're hidden from ordinary eyes,
at least for the most part, but they don't
mind a visit from those in the know.

They don't like each other much,
and sometimes they get into
long hissing arguments.

I bring them both tuna,
though, and that is something
that they can both agree on.

I think there is an imp, living inside one of the dumpsters in the manticore's alley. They are polite to each other when they pass, and otherwise each pretend the other is not there; it allows them to share the alleyway in peace.

The rhythm of the title was kind-of earworming me. I finally figured out why:

The Dragon and the Manticore

The Lion and the Unicorn (traditional)
The lion and the unicorn were fighting for the crown

The lion beat the unicorn all around the town.

Some gave them white bread, and some gave them brown;

Some gave them plum cake and drummed them out of town.

The Walrus and the Carpenter (Lewis Carroll)
The sun was shining on the sea,
Shining with all his might:
He did his very best to make
The billows smooth and bright--
And this was odd, because it was
The middle of the night.

Toona, hoomin. TOOOONA!

Not all monsters monst. Cookie Monster only monsts at cookies. He's fundamentally incapable of doing so at humans.

And some humans do monst.

And all creatures, great and small, deserve respect. Whether that's a healthy distance or a hot meal depends on each individual creature's nature and circumstance.

I hit the last verse and laughed hard enough to startle my local lap-panther off her perch!

Slice of life meets urban fantasy... That's a genre I could use more of. :D

Mainstream creators can't seem to get it without veering off into fighting a Big Bad/Organization Of Vaguely Evilness/Comic Destroyer Of Puppies/other antagonist that means that after they make that switch, the series focuses entirely on fighting instead of what they brought viewers in with. It's repetitive and boring to watch. Worst still, they don't even break it up with the good stuff.

Time to visit the Monster House series page.
