"In a Green Cathedral"

The redwoods rise up
to the sky like pillars
in a green cathedral.

We walk among them,
tiptoeing around their ankles,
talking in whispers, not wanting
to break the breathless hush
of their forest home.

It is said that redwoods
are so powerful that they
terraform their environment
to suit themselves.

As I listen to the sound of
the wind in their distant fronds
far overhead, I can't help but
wonder if it's science or magic.

* * *

Redwoods feature in national monuments such as Muir Woods.  They are indeed powerful enough to alter the environment to their own advantage in profound ways.

Well, Yes, of course. Such technology is far above our heads. Hundreds of feet, even. ;)

Solar power is TOTALLY practical. GERMANY makes it work, and they have worse weather than we do here in the Pacific Northwet! Anybody who says it's impractical hasn't been paying attention.

OTOH, anybody like that? Shift gears and actually use a religious argument: If solar power were so impractical, why did G-d make it *the* method by which plants get energy? No solar power, we don't f***ing eat. And if that gets them at least slowed down and starting to think, proceed thisaway: G-d gave me *brains*. How dare (She) get upset at me for using them?

And if THAT hook sticks? All of Science follows, and you have a successful conversion.

And if it doesn't? Do what the Master said, brush their dirt from the soles of your feet, and walk away. No use annoying the pig.

It was a powerful experience to go to college at UCSC, basically in a redwood forest, to be surrounded by those amazing trees every day. To walk through them early in the day, with mist dripping down from their branches onto me, to see the sunlight through them as I looked up. This poem brought back a lot of those memories - beautiful images in your words.

UC Santa Cruz, CA I was at the top of campus, right next to the forest.

I learned a while back that Great Conifer's personal name is Ithun (pronounced "EE-thoon"). Then later I learned of the Norse goddess Ithun, associated with "eternal life/youth" and denoted as "companion of the gods"...

Maybe... but you know those stories where the Aesir are challenged and some "unnamed companion" happens to be with them? I'm wondering if that isn't Ithun wearing a disguise.
