This poem came out of the August 1, 2017 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by prompts from [personal profile] alatefeline and [personal profile] daisiesrockalot. It also fills the "Urgent" square in my 2-1-17 Love Songs card for the Valentines Bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by [personal profile] daisiesrockalot.

"The Retraction Factor"

When all of the changes were
as complete as they were going to get,
and all of the paperwork had been filed,
Mrs. Mayweather called the newspaper about
a retraction and the church about a christening.

Clarissa was dressed up in a white gown
before being presented to the priest,
more-or-less in her mother's arms
even if they needed to use a barstool
to support most of her weight, and
properly named for her mother's mother.

She cried, too, which was considered lucky.

After the ceremony, the newspaper
printed the retraction:

On April 3, 1995,
George and Anne Mayweather
announced the birth of their son Charles,
named for his grandfather. They now wish
to issue a retraction. The baby was a girl after all!
They proudly welcome their daughter Clarissa,
named for her grandmother, on August 1, 2017.
They apologize for any confusion.

Now that all the urgent things had been
taken care of, and the truth set right
for once and for all, Clarissa
could get on with her life.

Notes:

Transsexuality is a divergence between biological sex and perceived gender. Transition is the process of changing one's life (and usually, but not always, one's body) to match that innate gender. Here's a look at male-to-female transition and how to support someone doing that.

Some families find a birth retraction helpful in transition.
