It literally means "tree cake" and that's how it looks, because it's made in layers on a spit.  I imagine one could cram an impressive amount of magic into that.

Every August, there's a street fair in my town. It celebrates the town's historical origins as a center of the clam industry, but there are vendors with many other types of food besides seafood. The past couple of years, competing with the zeppoles, funnel cakes, and "fried pies", there's been a truck from The Chimney Cake Factory (which is a local business, and I've got to get there sometime during the daytime, rather than waiting until next August!). Chimney cakes are sort of inside-out Baumkuchen. They have a dizzying variety of flavors and combinations, which can be filled with soft-serve ice cream for an even richer treat.

I'd still like to try a traditional Baumkuchen, though.

It's called the Clam Fest. It's actually fairly small in size, but it's a lot of fun. And one side of it is a block away from my house - since there's no admission, people can walk in anywhere, and I can stroll up the street and get a Chimney Cake, or a seafood dinner (if I ate seafood) - or listen to some decent local bar bands, or go on a carnival ride, or purchase various kinds of crafts. It's one of the high points of the summer :-)

I love Baumkuchen, and since I live in Germany, I'm right at the source, so to speak. Speaking of which, I should go out and get some, now that my appetite is awakened. *drool*
