Today in the Kitchen

I'm making another batch of pear pie filling.  I went out to pick up pears, and discovered that most of the ones on the ground were already eaten.  I think the possums, skunks, and raccoons have realized that it's pear season.  I got some, but I had to get a stick to knock a few more off the tree, enough for half a bucket, which fills the pancake bowl and then the medium-round crockpot.  So then we cleaned the pears and put them on to cook.  Yay us!

Are your pears ripe enough to use straight from the tree? Ours need to be ripened on after picking.

I made a small batch of pickled pears yesterday, from an Amish recipe.
