This poem came out of the July 4, 2017 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired and sponsored by Anthony & Shirley Barrette. It also fill the "change" square in my 7-31-17 card for the Cottoncandy Bingo Fest.

"The Four Gates"

There are four gates
that people pass through
on life's journey --

birth,
the beginning of the quest
and the introduction to family;

puberty,
the transition from childhood to adulthood
and the awakening of desire;

marriage,
the shift from "I" to "we"
and nest of the next generation;

death,
the end of the quest
and the return to Spirit from whence we came;

and all of these passages
we undertake together
in love and fellowship

except for the last.

* * *

Notes:

Rites of passage mark the major transitions of life.  Most cultures have some way of observing birth, puberty, marriage, and death.

Every once in a while, between either a knowledgable traveller, a knowledgable caregiver, or both, that latter is done correctly as well..... but far too rarely.

I remember an episode of M*A*S*H where they got lucky and managed it right. "I smell bread..." which gave the seeker accompanying the good Father the answer he needed.

I liked especially the transition from childhood to adulthood and the awakening of desire; and also the idea of gate versus bridge, because gates are closed behind one. We might look through the gate but hey, the door is closed. I'm thinking the bit quoted is reflexive to my online crone party at age 59 in tone. They do say we are adult once and a child twice. :)
