It's a thermotaxic synthetic fleecy fabric. So it will, rather subtly, "cuddle" people; and it fluffs up more if someone's cold, or flattens out if they're overwarm, to help regulate temperature. It stimulates the part of the brain that is soothed by contact comfort. So basically, it's a better zetetic version of some things we have.

The prison has been playtesting pillows and blankets made of Microfyne as a way to help inmates like Shiv who are iffy about self-control and touching other people. (See "Never Laid Open.") It lowers the chance of them going completely crazy from touch starvation, and then that better mood helps them get along with other people a little better.

There are separate programs in action also testing Microfyne for shock blankets in ambulances or police cars, and as cover for gizmotronic therapy pets.
