I posted two batches of garden photos today, pots and prairie garden

Today I took just a couple of pictures.

Here is the plant tower on the septic cap.  It had a little globe that lit up from solar power, but the tower blew down in today's wind and the globe came off.  I'll have to see if that can be fixed and reattached.

These pictures were taken yesterday, I just didn't have time to post them then.

I took these pictures after lunch on Tuesday, but didn't have time to post them until today.

Today I started by spreading two hoppers of grass seed in the forest yard.  Challenges:
* Spreading grass seed in high wind rarely works well.
* Shoving a cheap grass spreader over very rough ground also doesn't work well.
* Also the idiot who assembled this thing put the handle on upside-down, which I did not notice, because the model I examined closely was assembled correctly.  So the control is on the left side (not too bad, as I am ambidextrous) and the rate dial points at the ground (a real nuisance).  At some point we'll need to take that off and reposition it, but I don't have the spoons today.
However, there is now a lot of grass seed and white clover seed across the forest yard, which is an improvement over none.

Second round, I spread another hopper of grass/clover seed.  That's roughly 3/4 of a 50 pound bag.

Third round, I took pictures.

EDIT 4/15/17: Fourth round, I spread the final hopper of grass/clover seed.  This finishes off that 50 pound bag.  It covered the tilled areas in most of the front yard on both sides of the sidewalk, not counting the street side of the fencerow or the bit by the house that wraps around the side.  We still need to cover the area around the old raspberry patch too.  So that's another 50 pound bag to buy later.

EDIT 4/15/17: Fifth round, I watered plants around the septic cap and tried a little raking of the dirt hills.  I am not much use at the latter.

Today I fed the birds. It's sunny and bright, but the feeders are quite active -- lots of grackles and sparrows.

I haven't seen the mourning dove on the nest for several days, although the eggs are still there. Apparently it's been abandoned. :/ But perhaps another dove will start a new batch. There are often several clutches a season in that location, it's very popular.

Today I fed the birds. There are still two white eggs in the mourning dove nest.

It is cool and mostly sunny, so the flowers are open. :D

Today I planted a pair of purple tricyrtis in the purple-and-white garden.

The weather is cool and cloudy.  There are still two white eggs in the mourning dove nest.

I didn't find time to post this on Wednesday. I planted three irises in the wagonwheel garden.

Today all I did was feed the birds and walk around a bit. Someone was burning off corn cobs, though, I could smell the smoke.

Today I pulled weeds and cut brush around the septic tank cap.  One of my projects for this season is trying to grow something other than weeds there.  I've been trying grass, and it hasn't worked.  So I'll throw down more topsoil, and try some rabbit-resistant annuals, maybe a rhubarb plant and comfrey too.

Today I refilled the birdfeeders. Then I mulched around the contorta willow and started putting mulch around the big maple near the house.

I have miniature Dutch iris blooming now, along with snowdrops and a few more forsythia blossoms. :D

Today I put the protective jug back over one of the oak seedlings that had gotten loose, and mulched around it to keep that in place. I also put mulch around six other seedlings in the savannah garden.

The hazelnut bush has opened its catkins. When touched, they release clouds of golden pollen. :D Maybe this year I'll actually get some of the darn hazelnuts. I saw them last fall but only for a few days -- I think the squirrels pounced on them, possibly before they were even ripe.

In Session 5, we put together a big gear. The pieces for this finished emptying one of the four slabs of wooden parts.

This is the front view of the gear.  You can see the little pointer on it.

This is the back view of the gear.  It shows some of the working parts on the far end of the shaft. Wedging the parts onto that cross-shaped set of parts was a pain in the ass.

In Session 4, we built a long subassembly.

Let's build a timer! )
