Friday Yardening

Today is partly sunny and warm.

Round 1, I watered the potted plants on the porch and trimmed grass around the telephone pole.

The mourning dove eggs have hatched into two tiny, fuzzy squabs.  I found a video of one online.

Raspberries are beginning to turn pink in a few places.  Many of the mulberries are pink.

EDIT 5/26/17 -- Round 2, I pulled weeds around the forest garden.

Also the last shipment of plants arrived today.

EDIT 5/26/17 -- Round 3, I planted three windflowers, two stargazer lilies, and three balloon flowers around the barrel garden; and one White Feather hosta in the purple-and-white garden.

A cool breeze has blown up, downdraft from a storm some distance away.

EDIT 5/26/17 -- Round 4, I planted a white lilac and a black hollyhock.

EDIT 5/26/17 -- Round 5, I sowed more grass in the streetside yard.

It's getting dark, so I'm done for tonight.

Thursday Yardening

Today is mild and partly cloudy.

Round 1, I cut more grass around the wagonwheel garden.

There are still two white eggs in the mourning dove nest.

EDIT 5/25/17: Round 2, we picked up sticks in the yard near the house.

The sun is coming out, and the weather is heating up.  It's not all the way to hot yet, but it turning warm and muggy.  :/  I have a suspicion that the air will be solid mosquitoes this evening.

EDIT 5/25/17: Round 3, we finally got around to putting down the concrete pavers.  Four went at the corner of the patio for the burn barrel.  2 went near the barrel garden to hold the yard sculpture.

The air has cooled down somewhat and is pleasant again.

EDIT 5/25/17: Round 4, I trimmed grass around another tree and pulled weeds around the forest garden.

Courting Cardinals

I heard rustling and scratching outside my office window.  There in the bushes were a pair of cardinals, fluttering around and courting.  The male had a mouthful of something which he passed to the female.  Aww!  <3

EDIT 5/24/17:  Also today I spotted an indigo bunting perched on the pot hanger above the barrel garden.

Wednesday Yardening

Today is cool and drizzly.

Round 1, I straightened the pole for the hanging baskets by the barrel garden, and wrapped cord around the shaft to fasten it to the barrel for more support.

EDIT 5/24/17: After lunch, it was just spitting a bit, so I went out to sow some grass seed in bare patches around the old raspberry patch.  Of course, then it started really  raining.  :/

EDIT 5/24/17: When it stopped raining, I went back out to sow more grass seed.  It started raining again.

EDIT 5/24/17: Round 4, I sowed more grass seed in bare patches in the streetside yard.  This time I did not get rained out, and therefore got considerably more done.  \o/

As it is now dusk, I am done for the night.

Tuesday Yardening

Today is mild and cloudy.

Round 1, we picked up sticks along the sidewalk by the house.

Washington hawthorn and red-twig dogwood are blooming.

Round 2, I cut weeds from the septic garden and trimmed grass from around the goddess garden.

Monday Yardening

Today has been cool and breezy.

Round 1, we picked up sticks in the ritual meadow.

Round 2, I watered potted plants on the porch.

Round 3, I planted moonflowers in the barrel garden and the support wire for the telephone pole.  I also put more morning glory seeds around the wire.  Then I trimmed grass around the wagonwheel garden.

This afternoon we went out to Harbor Freight and bought a convertible handtruck (it can go on two wheels or four), a toolkit with a very nice assortment of items, and a moving blanket (which doubles as a picnic blanket).  :D

Sunday Yardening

Today was much cooler, with a brisk chilly wind.

Round 1, I picked up empty pots to throw away, and trimmed grass around the barrel garden.

Round 2, I sprayed weeds around the barrel garden, and picked up more empty pots to move out of the way.

Round 3, I trimmed grass around the white garden at the end of the driveway.  The yucca plants there are putting up flower stalks.  :D

The dove is still sitting on two white eggs near the kitchen window.

Saturday Yardening

Today is warm, muggy, and cloudy.  It rained last night.  The yard is soggy.

Round 1, I planted two blue-eyed grass, one in the wildflower garden and one in the prairie garden.  It's not actually a grass, but rather a wildflower that looks like grass.

Blackberries are blooming.

EDIT 5/20/17: Round 2, I planted two little bluestem grass in the prairie garden.  This is real prairie grass.

EDIT 5/20/17: Round 3, I planted two side-oats gramma in the prairie garden.

EDIT 5/20/17: Round 4, I planted two Indian grass and one unlabeled grass in the prairie garden.  This concludes the planting of things bought in the native plant sale.

Thursday Yardening

Today is sunny and sweltering.

Round 1, I planted mint seeds and chive seeds in the septic garden.

EDIT 5/18/17: Round 2, I planted mountain mint, New Jersey tea, wild quinine, and obedient plant in the wildflower garden. This concludes the planting of wildflowers from the native plant sale.  I still have half a dozen pots of native grass to put out.

The farmer east of us has lit fires to burn off the stalks piled up by the recent flooding.  The wind is wrong, so I can't smell them, but the flames are very bright orange against the blue shadows of dusk.

Thunderclouds are starting to pile up in places.  There's a chance of rain tonight and over the weekend.

Wednesday Yardening

... is a bust.  It's too windy to plant things today.  :/  Instead I wound up trying to reassemble planters that had blown over and scattered the contents.  *sigh*

Tuesday Yardening

Today is sunny, breezy, and very warm.

Round 1, I planted jack-in-the-pulpit, woodland phlox, yellow violet, and two Virginia bluebells in the woodland garden.  The latter are dormant by now, but hopefully they will bloom next spring.  :D  My parents have those and the phlox all over everywhere.  I'm not sure which variety the yellow violet is.

EDIT 5/16/17: Round 2, I planted a forked aster in the prairie garden.  This was in a gallon pot, thus took a shovel to dig the hole, so I only planted one thing this round.

EDIT 5/16/17: Round 3, I planted a smooth aster and a celandine poppy in the prairie garden.  This completes planting the first flat of things from the native plant sale.

The black raspberries and the mulberry trees have green fruit on them now.

In the heated air, the heavy scent of the peonies hangs in a sweet perfume.  The breeze carries it twenty or thirty feet downwind, and the big white blossoms bob up and down.   It's beautiful.

EDIT 5/16/17: Round 4, I planted two butterfly weeds, one by the barrel garden and another in the septic garden.  I planted a compass plant and a Missouri ironweed in the prairie garden.  I put out more morning glory seeds around the support wire for the telephone pole, and also some moonflower seeds there and in the barrel garden.

As it is now dusk, I am done planting for today.  I completed one flat and started another.  \o/

Monday Yardening

Today has been sunny and very warm.

Round 1, I planted another sedum in the septic garden, a Red Dragon penstemon (which is actually blooming pink) in the wildflower garden, and potted up some moss roses.

Round 2, I planted another penstemon (probably white) and a wild white indigo in the wildflower garden.

Mosquitoes everywhere today, inevitable after a couple weeks of rain.  I wish the toads would stop fornicating in the puddles long enough to eat something.  More toadlings later will be lovely, but no help for the buggy air right now.

My irises are blooming.

Sunday Yardening

Today is sunny, warm, and breezy.

Round 1, I potted up the last of the purple-and-white petunias.

I also startled the mourning dove off her nest when I went back to the porch, so it's still active.

I've posted a picture of the native plants that I bought on Saturday.

Round 2, I potted up the last of the snapdragons, verbena, and gazania.  I put one gazania in the septic garden to see if it would survive the herbivores.

Round 3, I potted up two ice plants, one yellow and one amber.  I also planted a four-pack of pinks in the prairie garden, and bronze fennel in the strip garden.

Saturday Yardening

Today is sunny and warm.

This morning we went to the native plant sale for Grand Prairie Friends.  I bought two flats of plants, mostly prairie and woodland wildflowers.  The big score was a jack-in-the-pulpit.  :D  We also picked up our t-shirts.

This afternoon, I took some pictures and posted them

Thursday Yardening

Today is mild and damp.  It stormed last night.

I started planting by potting up the Mother's Day planter.  It's  big ceramic pot with verdigris glaze and a coppery rim.  So I put together white lobelia, white petunias, and mixed coleus with a lot of bronze in the leaves.  The center plant is a gazania that blooms white with mauve streaks, tying together the rest of the arrangement.  :D  That was the big find yesterday, because it's not something I grow regularly.  I just saw it and realized it would be perfect.

I also took the moss pot outside.

Another mourning dove nest has been started under the porch by the kitchen window.  So far it has one white egg in it.

Round 2, I filled the square blue planter.  About half of it is white lobelia, with a Dusty Miller in the center.  The rest consists of a white petunia, purple-and-white striped petunia, purple-and-white picot petunia, and purple-and-white double ruffled petunia. :D

Round 3, I filled the round planter that has grapes on it.  I used a leftover yellow-and-red gazania as the centerpiece, then filled in the rest with warm colors of verbena and snapdragons.

Wednesday Yardening

Today we went out shopping.  We bought a bunch of house and yard stuff, including pavers to put under the yard sculpture.  I bought another flat of plants, some of them for Mother's Day.  I got a sea sponge and put the air plants on it.

Posting late, because no sooner did we get home than the power went out for several hours.  *headdesk*  But it came back just before midnight.

Tuesday Yardening

Today is sunny and quite warm, with just a little breeze.

Round 1, I planted dill, oregano, thyme, and pineapple sage in the strip garden.

Round 2, I potted up jalapeno pepper plants with lime basil, and cayenne pepper plants with sweet basil.  I put the leftovers in the cistern herb garden.

Round 3, I planted more morning glory seeds around the support wire for the telephone pole.

Round 4, I potted cilantro, flat parsley, and curled parsley and put the extras in the cistern garden.  I also put together a pot of yellow and orange flowers.  Then I pulled more weeds around the forest garden.

The first peony bud is open.  The white globe allium is in full bloom.  I rather like it, and may buy more.  They come in purple too, which might be nice for the purple-and-white garden.

It's dusk now, so I'm done for the night.

Monday Yardening

Today is warm and partly sunny.

Round 1, I weeded and then planted marigolds in the corner of the cistern herb garden and started planting some in the strip garden.

A considerable amount of time and energy (today and yesterday) went into helping Doug assemble the very large and heavy tool cabinet.

Round 2, I did more weeding to plant the rest of the marigolds in the strip garden, then I planted some impatiens in the purple-and-white garden.  I had a 4-pack of white and another of pinkish-lavender.

Round 3, I filled an oblong planter with yellow-and-purple torenia, a purple daisylike flower, and some other purple-and-yellow thing.  I also watered all the plants that I put out today.

Round 4, I pulled a ton of weeds around the forest garden and planted a columbine under there.

As it is now dusk, I'm done for the night.
