Funnmy how every generation has to relearn what the Imperial Roman army knew so well! It's the same with keeping cavalry in the field during a battle.

What's funny (interesting) is that they're built under the "post road" clause of the Constitution, but are *also* part of the DOD's Strategic Highway Network...

(Wikipedia says the bit about interstates having one mile in five straight and flat is an urban legend. Not that it matters; a C-130 can land in half that, and a fair number of combat aircraft these days have some sort of vertical takeoff capability....)
