ysabetwordsmith: (Schrodinger's Heroes)
[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith
This poem came out of the June 7, 2011 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by prompts from LiveJournal users Rowyn and Kelkyag. It is posted in thanks for the excellent article about the supercollider that [personal profile] siliconshaman found. This poem belongs to the Schrodinger's Heroes project, which you can explore further via the menu page.

"Applied Physicists, and Friends"

Alex is the brains of the outfit,
all quantum physics and chaos theory made manifest,
unfolding universes with a delicate touch.
But when Alex says "Oops,"
even God winces.

Ash is the computer wizard:
0 becomes 1, 1 becomes 2,
and then they meet 3.
Ash builds firewalls that not even the Devil himself
could walk through unsinged.

Bailey is the balance,
fulcrum of the lever that is Alex and Ash.
Bailey turns theory into practice,
the person who moves the immovable object
out of the way of the irresistible force.

Kay is the security blanket,
determined to keep everyone alive
whether that means spraying bullets or spreading bandages.
Kay provides the place to stand,
under the fulcrum and the lever long enough,
when the world needs to be moved.

Morgan is the eye in the sky,
long view and binocular vision,
the lens through which everything is seen.
Where Morgan points,
everyone looks.

Pat is the social lubricant,
keeping the gears running smoothly
and everything on track.
When there are explanations to be made,
Pat makes them,
from scratch if necessary.
Also coffee.

Quinn is the strange quark,
undefined variable forever ready
to spring into action and balance any equation
before it can tip into disaster.
The only thing that bothers Quinn is being pinned down:
a safety valve must be able to flap
in order to remain unflappable.

Tim the Tentacle Monster
was never meant to be part of this engine,
brought in by accident and unable to disengage,
yet penetrating so gracefully into the empty spaces
that they seem in retrospect to have been made for this shape
and awaiting only the arrival to perform perfectly.
Tim is the exception that proves the rule,
holding everyone together
in the precious embrace of common ground.

These are the heroic figures
who stand between here and there,
holding the quantum bridge against all comers.
They are the best that Earth and the universe have to offer.
Quirks notwithstanding, they get the job done,
and ladies and gentlebeings,
you are in good hands.

Ha! that's a first... verse, that is. For once it is the *first* verse that provides the twist.... :D

Do I remember correctly that you're familiar with a certain Shannon Foraker, of the Republic of Haven?

Like, very much like...
although now I'm pondering what the Heroes would be doing if they were in our reality, with no Tef to bind them all into a unit.
