ysabetwordsmith: (Schrodinger's Heroes)

This story fills a square on my second card for the [community profile] cottoncandy_bingo fest. This fest encourages people to create and share material focused on what is variously called fluff, schmoop, gentle fiction, light reading, comfort reading, positive thinking, chicken soup for the soul, or anything else that offers a fun alternative to usual run of sex, violence, and angst of modern media. I'm hoping to attract some new readers for my writing.

The following story belongs to Schrodinger's Heroes, featuring an apocryphal television show supported by an imaginary fandom. It's science fiction about quantum physics and saving the world from alternate dimensions. It features a very mixed cast in terms of ethnicity and sexual orientation. This project developed with input from multiple people, and it's open for everyone to play in. You can read more about the background, the characters, and a bunch of assorted content on the menu page.

Begin this story with Part 1, Part 2. Skip to Part 5.  This is a crossover with BBC Sherlock. You can read how these characters found each other in "THE Woman."

Fandom: BBC Sherlock and Original (Schrodinger's Heroes)
Prompt: Sunrise / Sunset
Medium: Fiction
Summary: John Watson wakes up in the Teferact compound and meets some of the other members of Schrodinger's Heroes, a process that ranges from charming to nerve-wracking.
Content Notes: Morning routines. Flangst. Oblique references to previous canon-typical mayhem. Happy ending.

"Texas Sunrise" Part 3

Ash led the way to a kitchen lined with warm brown wood and terra-cotta tiles. A coffee machine purred on the counter, but a proper teakettle sat on the stove. Fragrant steam rose from a griddle full of French toast and Canadian bacon. John's mouth watered.

At the stove stood a slim man with hair an impossible shade of candy-apple red, dressed in a faded maple leaf t-shirt. "Bonjour, chérie," he said to Ash in a sweet Québécois accent.

"Morning, Quinn," said Ash. "Throw on another piece of toast for John here, would you? He took care of Morgan at the bar last night."

"Merci, mon ami, we owe you one," Quinn said to John. Not one but two thick slices of bread went onto the griddle, along with a generous slab of bacon. Quinn neatly flipped Ash's serving onto a plate, handed it to her, then rearranged the remaining food on the griddle. John's stomach grumbled.

The teakettle whistled. "If you'll just direct me to the tea, I'll be happy to help with that," John said.

"That cabinet there," Quinn said, pointing with his spatula.

"Where in the -- oh," said John. The entire left side of the cabinet was tea: Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Darjeeling, Ceylon, green tea, white tea, something called rooibos purporting to be red tea that John felt certain did not even belong to the Camellia genus, and more honest herbal teas such as peppermint and chamomile. The other half of the cabinet held coffee, which John gladly ignored in favour of more civilised options.

John was further pleased to see that the bottom shelf held things such as tea balls and sugar tongs. "Is English Breakfast all right with everyone?" he asked, and when they nodded, he took down a canister of loose-leaf tea from between boxes of teabags. He soon put together cream and sugar and lemon.

By that time, everyone's breakfast was done, and they carried it to the table. Sunlight was coming in the windows now. Much of the sky was a bright lavender, warmer pink toward the east and cooler blue to the west.

Vocabulary

Quinn is French-Canadian, and frequently mixes French words into English. Bear in mind that French encodes gender heavily, so you may have seen these words in slightly different variations.

bonjour -- good morning, good day

chérie -- sweetheart, darling, dear, honey, love (feminine)

Québécois -- a French-speaking native or resident of the Canadian province Quebec (masculine)

merci -- thank you

mon ami -- my friend (masculine)

Plenty of effective imagery packed into a short piece; I was able to form a really nice mental image of the scene - just enough detail and no clutter. Also got a chuckle about rooibos, which I happen to be drinking right now.

Now, that is civilisation. And a wonderful piece so far.
*sighs inwardly and relaxes*
