ysabetwordsmith: (Schrodinger's Heroes)

Some aspects of fanon were extrapolated from original episodes of Schrodinger's Heroes, actors and crew of the show, or from other sources than a specific piece of fanfic. Some examples are listed below.

Fanon

* Alex as portrayed in canon episodes is a genius, but oblivious to a lot of everyday details. Not everyone likes the oblivious!Alex aspect of canon. So Alex is sometimes portrayed as a much more astute yet subtle character who notices a great deal but pretends to be oblivious as camouflage.

* In cold weather, Alex wears a mobius scarf.  (Thanks to [personal profile] aldersprig for this idea.)

* Bailey has a cousin named Mary Sue, mentioned in passing across several episodes. She always wants to come visit the compound but never makes it there, starting with the pre-grand-opening party. Some fanfic maintains this tradition of keeping her offstage, but she's also a popular onstage addition in various renditions. She is sometimes genderbent into "Marty Stu" instead. Fan authors who write themselves into a story often present themselves as cousins of Bailey.

* If Chris appears in a story, it is customary to include some ridiculously trivial injury and a round of whining.

* As demonstrated in the episode "Is There an Echo in Here? Echo in Here?" Chris wants to be the biggest person around. Whenever there are two or more versions of Chris, they will promptly compare height, girth, weight, and sexual equipment then start an argument over who is "bigger."

* Quinn's t-shirt reading "The sun is trying to kill me." actually refers to him coming from a northerly part of Canada.  However, it has led to vampire!Quinn being very popular in creaturefic.  (Idea courtesy of [personal profile] order_of_chaos.)

* If Schrodinger appears in a story, it is common for him to escape what looks like certain death or fatal injury. Often the cat blithely waltzes through situations where someone (or everyone) else is seriously injured or killed. There is much fan art illustrating such scenes, the most famous being a t-shirt of Schrodinger walking through a minefield.

* Characters often appear in suggestive or ironic t-shirts.
  • Alex has, "Stand back -- I'm going to try science." "If it's green or it wriggles, it's biology. If it stinks, it's chemistry. If it doesn't work, it's physics." "I'm with genius." (with upward arrow), "I (atom symbol) Science," and "Think globally. Act within local variable scope."
  • Ash has the line-and-circle 'power' symbol, "Homeland Security: Fighting Terrorism Since 1492" (with the photo of Geronimo & company), "I am the IT guy," "The cake is a lie." (with cake slice), and a "Help" button. Pregnant!Ash has been shown in a maternity shirt that says, "Loading ... please wait."  Another ethnic activism t-shirt of hers has a much longer quote on the back: "WARNING / TRADITIONAL INDIAN / WILL NOT REFORM / Will not abandon traditional beliefs. / Will not give up native language. / Will not be forced to cut hair. / Will not be oppressed. / Will not obtain permit to hunt and fish. / Will not celebrate Columbus Day."
  • Bailey has "I'm here because you broke something." "I void warranties." "It's okay, I've brought the duct tape," and "When in doubt, try another hole."
  • Chris received as a gift from the team a t-shirt with "Periodic BeEr."
  • Dusty has "Είναι όλα τα ελληνικά μου." ("It's all Greek to me.")
  • Kay has, "No user-serviceable parts inside." and "I see dead people." (with crosshairs). In the poem "Forfeiture" she wears a camo t-shirt with "Pain is just weakness leaving the body."
  • Midge has "Bill of Rights (Void Where Prohibited)" "Nose for Trouble," and "Natural redhead: keep out of direct sunlight."
  • Morgan has "As a matter of fact, I am a rocket scientist." "I'm only here until I achieve escape velocity," "100% Star Stuff" (in glitter), a spiral galaxy (with a movable "You are here!" pin), and a wraparound starscape.
  • Pat has a caffeine molecule and "Social engineering specialist."
  • Quinn has "The sun is trying to kill me," "(ctrl) (alt) (insert)" "I (maple leaf) Canada," and a navy-blue shirt with a teapot on it (a tea shirt).
* In canon episodes, when characters go outside -- and especially into the tall grass and scrub within the Ring -- at least one usually carries a walking stick or something else to poke ahead on the trail and shoo snakes out of the way. This is real-life Texan practice due to aggressive wildlife, and a piece of local color that appears in much of the fanfic. It's often phrased as "The stick is your friend," after Bailey's remark to Morgan in "Refolding the Map" ("This is a stick. The stick is your friend.").

* Alex's desk, when shown in canon episodes, often has a bizarre puzzle or sculpture on it. The first in "Earth to Alex, Come in Please" is a conjoined pair of 5x5 Rubik's cubes; a later example is a klein bottle mug. Fan writers have continued this trend by placing all sorts of exotic or improbable devices on Alex's desk.

* Similarly Alex's books are often visible, beginning with Warped Passages by Lisa Randall, The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time by Stephen W. Hawking, and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll in "Earth to Alex, Come in Please." In canon, Alex admires both Hawking and Randall, with a particular puppydog flavor to her feelings about Randall. In fanfic, ace!Alex pretty much always has a big squish on Randall.

Schrodinger's Heroes also has a menu post.

Quinn has "The sun is trying to kill me."

I knew Quinn was a vampire. I just knew it. *grins*

This fanon is full of awesomeness. ♥

:D

I'm glad you're glad. *grins* I had a thought - are you planning on doing a section on crossovers? Because if you are, that series of sentient!Teferact/TARDIS ficlets might be worth mentioning, and the one where Alex is a superintelligent shade of the colour blue, and the truly hilarious Harry Potter AU where several versions of each of the characters show up with no explanation at all (notably, canon!Alex and stealth-oblivious!Alex are in Ravenclaw and Slytherin respectively).

The superintelligent shade of the colour blue was a passing reference in one of the Hitchhiker's Guide books - I can't remember which one - and I've always liked the idea. Alex being superintelligent, after all. That fic also had eddies in the space-time continuum :P

Arrgh. Sorry, that should have been stealth-observant!Alex, not stealth-oblivious. So...

Notably, canon!Alex and stealth-observant!Alex are in Ravenclaw and Slytherin respectively. Canon!Alex, as brilliant and oblivious as in canon, vanishes into the Ravenclaw library for much of the fic, appearing every now and then to break people's brains by not noticing that the combination of magic and advanced physics just doesn't happen and that half the knowledge she's taking for granted is unheard of in the wizarding world. The version of Alex that so often shows up in fandom - secretly much more observant and fooling everyone by pretending not to be - acts much the same as her counterpart, and soon has everyone wondering how someone so innocent ended up in a house known for ruthlessness and deception. When she isn't busy breaking the supposed laws of magic and physics, Alex finds this vastly amusing.

Thought of another possible crossover - Alex in Wonderland/Alex through the Looking Glass.

Here is the first paragraph of Through the Looking Glass (the original, not the fic) to prove it:

One thing was certain, that the white kitten had had nothing to do with it: -- it was the black kitten's fault entirely. For the white kitten had been having its face washed by the old cat for the last quarter of an hour (and bearing it pretty well, considering); so you see that it couldn't have had any hand in the mischief.

Well, clearly any of Bailey's cousins who are vampires should sparkle. That takes care of Twilight :P

That's the bloodline Jean-Claude's out of, isn't it? Oh, yessssss. That should be... interesting, in this fandom, to say the least. *grins*

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Anita Blake, Tanya Huff's Blood series, and LJ Smith's Night World series. They're the ones that spring to mind, but really, every fandom needs a Vampire!AU, whether it's a crossover or not.
