This poem came out of the April 4, 2017 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by prompts from [personal profile] daisiesrockalot and [personal profile] librarygeek. It also fills the "bittersweet" square in my 4-1-17 card for the Month of Rainbows fest. This poem has been sponsored by [personal profile] daisiesrockalot.

Warning: This poem is all about sizeism, so it that's iffy territory for you, please consider your tastes and headspace before reading onward.

"Saying No to Powerlessness"

No matter how thin the cracks are,
it's always the fat people who
get shoved into them.

Call it sizeism,
call it fatphobia,
call it skinny people
being giant assholes:

it's all the same in the end.

People get shut out of pictures,
jobs, homes, love ... life.

When they try to talk about it,
the outsiders don't understand;
the thin ones and the fit ones
never realize what it's like
to live only in the cracks.

Some people are crushed by it.

Others learn how to fight back
and survive the oppression,
a bittersweet rebellion.

A few even become heroic
and learn how to help others.

It's all about realizing
that fat is a way of

saying no to powerlessness.

"Fat is a way of saying no to powerlessness and self-denial."

(These links may be touchy if size is a sensitive issue for you.)
Sizeism is most often thought of as fatphobia, per the prompts for this poem, but it also encompasses hostility against people who very thin, short, tall, or otherwise differently shaped. It causes many problems, some of which can injure or kill people. There are ways to cope with sizeism and fight back against it.
