ysabetwordsmith: (Schrodinger's Heroes)
[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith
This poem came out of the August 5, 2014 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] siliconshaman. It also fills the "Mirror, mirror: Doppelgangers, clones and evil doubles" square in my 7-30-14 card for the [community profile] genprompt_bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by Anthony & Shirley Barrette. It belongs to the Schrodinger's Heroes project.

"Like the Sun"

Nobody was best pleased
when evil!Schrodinger managed
to drop a spanner down the Tef,
hitting the moral vector and
the anthropomorphic one and
Alex-only-knew what else
along the way.

This left good!Schrodinger talking,
Pat and Chris both mute -- although
the former was a cat-man and
the latter a dog-man this time,
curled up on the carpet together.

"It is my considered opinion that
the actions of my doppelganger
divulge some deep dissatisfaction,"
Good!Schrodinger proclaimed as he
curled his sable tail about his toes.

"What do you propose we do about it?"
Alex asked, regarding him with respect.

"Why, clearly we must trick him into
the truth field and find out,"
Good!Schrodinger said.

"In my experience, the truth is a tesseract,"
Alex said. "It has a lot of sides, and
you can never see all of them at once."

"I think Elvis put it best," Morgan said slowly,
tucking his hair behind his ear. "Truth is like the sun.
You can shut it out for a time, but it ain't goin' away."

Quinn put his pale, slim hand in the air.
"Excuse me, but are we sure we want to know
what's going on inside that fuzzy little head?
Ça tourne pas rond son affaire."

"We have to try something,
and I don't think it will help
to trick him into saying
his own name backwards,"
Bailey pointed out.

So Quinn grilled strips of fragrant beef
and scooped them into po' boy buns,
then handed them out to the team.

Bailey dug into his with a fork,
not wanting to get his fingers greasy.

"Just put mine down over there,"
Alex said with a lazy wave of her hand.
"I'm still working on a solution."

Quinn set down the sandwich
just inside the truth field
and left it there, steaming.

They didn't have to wait long
before evil!Schrodinger appeared
and scarfed down the beef,
white tail twitching in delight.

"Just what possessed you
to engineer this incident?"
good!Schrodinger demanded.

"I hate you," evil!Schrodinger said,
then a breath later, "I love you."

Bailey dropped his fork in shock.

The white cat yowled in dismay
and bolted through a dimensional rift,
abandoning the half-eaten sandwich.

Behind him, the elaborate machinations
began to unravel without their master
to maintain the configuration,
slowly tilting everything toward normal.

"Well, at least we got rid of him,"
Morgan said, his tone a bit dubious.

Good!Schrodinger looked as if
he had swallowed a bug.
"My apologies, Quinn, you were right.
We should have left that cat in the bag."

Notes:

"Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain't goin' away."
-- Elvis Presley

The doppelganger myth also relates to the tropes Doppelganger, Evil Twin, and Evil Doppelganger.

Ça tourne pas rond son affaire
He is crazy, out of your mind
-- Quebecois slang

The reference to saying a name backwards refers to Mister Mxyzptlk, but it's also a classic way of getting rid of fairies.

“You can recognize a small truth because its opposite is a falsehood. The opposite of a great truth is another truth.”
Niels Bohr

Thanks for the Quebecois slang link. I think I'll be making use of that. :) See also, quite a few orange!folks, including orange!Quinn.

Great minds!

Internet references aren't always perfect. Thanks for catching this.

Ça tourne pas rond son affaire.

Ooooh, I got to slice'n'dice Quebecois slang. "He's not right in his..." literally, "cover" or "case", but informally meaning "hat" or more pointedly "head". Ello es loco in su cabeza, sí.

I'm *assuming* G!S/E!S is M/M... this could turn out *really* bad otherwise, like Mordred-grade bad... (Yes, that reference has lots of layers... and that was a horrid pun...)

Even in ordinary, mundane-as-Wonder-bread L-America, cats grok a lot more English than most give them credit... and talk back... The permakitten's usual step up to the top of the cat tree was blocked by a tub of cookies this morning, so I boosted her up; as she settled in to watch Bird TV she gave a little churrup that felt an awful lot like "Thanks!"...

Well done. \o/

>> I'm *assuming* G!S/E!S is M/M... <<

Yes. Per canon, Schrodinger is a neutered male cat. Other dimensions may occasionally introduce other sexual dynamics, but usually they're M/M. Also usually ace.

0_o If you look in LOL_HEROES you'll see things like a litter of kittens labeled "Ace!Schrodinger is not responsible for these."

Yes they do.

Aww!

The link "Friends, Family and Fireworks", under the 'Don't Try This at Home' Shrodinger's Heroes Series on the PenUltimate page lead to this poem (Like the Sun) instead.

The link on the 'menu page' on dreamwidth is good, though.
