This poem is spillover from the March 1, 2016 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from LJ user Rowyn. It also fills the "motivation" square in my 2-29-16 card for the Villain Bingo fest and the "celebratory kiss" square in my 10-1-15 card for the [community profile] trope_bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by [personal profile] janetmiles. It belongs to the series Fiorenza the Wisewoman.

"Buoni Frutti"

When the strawberries began
to bloom on the south-facing slopes,
Fiorenza took Abelie and Margherita
out for a hike in the morning.

The wisewoman showed her students
the running vines and the tiny white flowers,
explaining how they would soon grow
heavy with sweet red fruit.

"Now look down at the village,"
said Fiorenza. "I grew up there,
and I love it very much. I think that
you two are coming to love it too,
even though you were not born here."

Both of the girls nodded.

"Well now, it's the way of girls
becoming women to fall in love
with handsome young men, and
therein lies my dilemma," she said,
revealing the motivation behind
their current conversation.

Abelie and Margherita giggled,
and Abelie pointed in the direction
of Faggiola, the distant village where
Fiorenza's sweetheart Giacinto lived.

"Yes, exactly," said Fiorenza.
"Giacinto and I love each other,
but we both have a responsibility
to our villages. If we marry and
move in together, then that would
leave one village unattended."

Margherita gave her an anxious look.

"Now it happens that we thought of
a possible solution, but we would need
a lot of help to make it work," said Fiorenza.
"That is where you two come in, if you wish."

The girls jumped up and down,
pointing to themselves.

"Wait until I tell you what I want, before
you agree to it," the wisewoman warned.
"You might not like it, after all."

Abelie and Margherita hardly settled,
but they waited for her to continue.

"Giacinto and I would like to find replacements,
setting someone else as the wisewoman in
each of our villages, so that the two of us
could travel around wherever we're needed,"
said Fiorenza. "I have here before me a pair
of very capable students. So I am wondering
if you might like to become wisewomen,
one for Nocciolaia and one for Faggiola."

The two sisters looked at each other.

Then Abelie opened her mouth
and out came a solid carnation. Yes.

Margherita opened her mouth and out
came chrysoprase. Acceptance and optimism.

"Thank you," said Fiorenza, hugging them both.
"I will do everything I can to teach you how
to take good care of our villages."

The wisewoman kept her word, and
the girls kept theirs, studying diligently.

The next time Fiorenza saw Giacinto
in the marketplace of Fermo, she
gave him the good news.

"Abelie and Margherita want
to become wisewomen," she said.
"Truly, I do not know what I have done
to deserve such eager apprentices."

"Buon seme dà buoni frutti," he said,
and kissed her soundly in celebration.
A good tree makes good fruit.

Notes:

Buon seme dà buoni frutti.
• Translation: Good tree makes good fruit.
• Meaning: Good parents will make good children due to example followed closely and daily.

Planning ahead is an important skill. Understand how to make a life plan. This template looks at different stages and aspects of goals. This page divides into life, five-year, and daily goals in different areas. Here is an example of a life plan.

Strawberries are popular in Italy.

In the language of flowers, a solid-colored carnation means "yes."

Gemstones also have symbolic meaning; chrysoprase implies acceptance and optimism.

Well! Wow (as is not uncommon for me with your poems), and a bit of head-scratching: first when the girls keep reacting without words, and then when they do "speak", which answers the first question and raises another.

I seem to recall reading about such powers/problems in your poetry before but couldn't be sure. So I followed your link to Fiorenza's index page, but they're not in the cast list*. Help, please?

* That first came out Swypoed as "cat list". I suspect that Marchesa Micia is visiting with my Ista.

Abelie and Margherita were introduced in "Pearls and Posies".

Several afterwards include them or talk about them, too, such as "Her Crystalline Voice and "Faith as a Grain". I don't have a complete list at hand, but these should at least get you started on them.

(Several poems later...) Argh, now see what you made me do. I wasn't intending to reread these today...

Oh well, at least I found a couple more; Abelie is in "Il Suo Nido รจ Bello", and Margherita is (barely) mentioned in "Not Far from the Tree". (I don't think either is really necessary reading to know who they are though.)

(All joking aside, np, you're welcome. :) )

Ah, good. I knew there was something familiar in those spells on the girls, and now I see that I read both those poems when Ysabet posted them, and commented on them both. :-)
