[personal profile] dialecticdreamer has written a batch of demifiction following my poem "Berettaflies."  These entries will detail some of what happens in and around Easy City in response to that incident.  The first newspaper article is now up, "Children's Hospital Closes Doors."  There will be more articles and letters to the editor later.

We are also inviting fans to write, in character, your own letters to the editor.  What would you say if various people funded dangerous GMO research in your city, gengineered horrifying bugs, and cracked open a lab which released swarms of them into the wild?  And then all scrammed.

EDITS: New Entries by [personal profile] dialecticdreamer

"Lab Cooperating with Police Investigation" looks at the legal response to the containment breach at the lab.

"Students Killed in Environmental Study" explores the damage done by the berettaflies.

"Man Hospitalized -- Insects at Large" follows up with a victim outside the original college students.  See also "Saint Henriette Expands First Aid Classes" in the same post for a look at how Terramagne-America does damage control in a crisis like this, and how someone offers a concrete apology for a minor mistake.

"Three Deaths After Supervillain Lab and Spectrum Collide" is from the evening edition on day three of the crisis.  More information is emerging as people study the problem, analyze what went wrong, and discuss how to proceed next.  Notice that the first two deaths came from acute anaphylaxis while the third happened due to complications, probably organ failure from toxins.

"Twilight: A Berettaflies Story" reveals a lot more details about one of the victims.  Abraham McCoy faces his situation with a quiet act of heroism.

"Letters to the Editor" Part 1 of 2 features a collection of responses from Easy City citizens.  This batch deals with gardens, the Spectrum, and a wild-ass rant.

"Students Released from Hospital" is another newspaper article about survivors of the berettafly stings, some of them now recovering enough to go home.  Several more letters to the editor appear below the article as citizens demand answers from the parties responsible for this soup incident.

"Fiction: Stirring the Pot" is a story about a police meeting after Paula's announcement in "Students Released from Hospital."

"Fiction: Bad News and Bad Breaks" (Part 1 and Part 2 of 2) introduces Haruko's parents.  Unfortunately.  Well, now you know why he needed a family of choice.

"Fiction: Reaching Out (A Special Project)" follows Haruko as he starts to pick up the loose pieces of his life and help other people deal with the disruption caused by the berettaflies.  Part 2 is "Delivery Road Show."  Part 3

"Fiction: Synchronicity" shows the fallout from a particularly ill-conceived prank.

"Long Distance Offer" comes at the beginning of Week 3, so probably day 21 or 22.  Aidan wants to donate some money to St. Henriette's for renovations to protect against berettaflies.  "When It Rains..." follows very closely on that, with a delivery of something to help protect people.

"Being Neighborly" directly follows "Oops" and gives Ashley some support for learning how to cook.

"Truth and Dare" involves Ashley and Haruko talking about safe and healthy interactions while he jogs, then working on some quiet activities together.  Part 1, Part 2, Part 3.

EDITS: Letters to the Editor by Various Readers

[personal profile] rix_scaedu has written "Demifiction: Letter to the Editor of the New Orleans Clarion-Picayune."  This one asks some astute questions about berettafly life cycle and behavior.  Alas, only one person knows that at this time, and Stylet has bugged out.

[personal profile] shiori_makiba has written "A Letter to the Editor" raising the issue of the Spectrum causing massive collateral damage.

[personal profile] siliconshaman  has written "Demifiction: Letter to the Editor" pointing out some things for people to watch for and, notably, something Stylet has neglected to do that he will deeply regret because it is about to hit him where he lives and I am so going to take advantage of that.

[personal profile] lone_cat has written "Demifiction: Letter to the Editor" proposing a new way of measuring the damage from a soup incident.

[personal profile] siliconshaman has written "A Further Letter to the Editor" discussing the scientific nomenclature of berettaflies.

[personal profile] redsixwing has written "Letter to the Editor" broaching the topic of possible benefits from berettaflies.

[personal profile] librarygeek has picked up the scientific nomenclature thread in "Letter to the Editor" announcing a public discussion of how the berettaflies should be named and possible damage mitigation.

[personal profile] helgatwb has written "Letter to the Editor" which asks sharp questions about the culprits behind the incident.

[personal profile] siliconshaman has written "An Open Letter" from Ashley, who is introduced in the poem "Black and White" thumbnailed below.  She has some very sharp things to say to Mr. Pernicious, Stylet, and the Spectrum.

[personal profile] thnidu has written "Letter to the Editor" about someone finding a berettafly, set during the first week.

EDITS: Other

[personal profile] shiori_makiba has posted the poem "Metamorphosis" about another victim of the berettaflies, the second one to develop superpowers.  A character sheet appears after the verses.  So it looks like about 1:12 manifestations in victims stung.  That's a lot.  The overall pattern, however, is pretty consistent with zetetic exposure: most people get sick, a handful die, a very few develop superpowers.  Anything life-threatening can do that, but the high rate of manifestation coupled with the fact that both new soups have related powers suggests that the venom contains a metagen which can bestow  powers, not just activate latent ones.  "Practical Things" follows Tsubasa as she starts adapting to her new butterfly wings.  "Cards" is a sequel to this, about Tsubasa reaching out to other survivors.  "Sugar" explores Tsubasa's changing tastes in food immediately after waking up with butterfly wings.  "Secret World" introduces her discovery of ultraviolet vision.  "Expectations" talks about her big brother.  "How Are You Feeling?" addresses Tsubasa's discomfort with all the people around her and how she's struggling to express her emotions.

"PGG Plant Swap" is my contribution to the demifiction thread.  Appearing in several Easy City newspapers and flyers posted in public places, this is one garden center's response to the incident, just under a week after the containment breach.

[personal profile] siliconshaman has written the poem "Black and White" about another berettafly victim who develops superpowers, in this case exuding venom.  "Black and White and Read" is a sequel to this, in which Ashley makes a new friend.  Read Part 1, Part 2.

[personal profile] redsixwing is writing the story "Butterfly Net" about a biochemist at Loyola University, Madhukar Bhattacharya, responding to the berettaflies.  It follows a similar day-entry format as the police announcements I used recently, but from a more personal perspective.  Read Part 1, Part 2Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6.  Here is Madhukar's letter to Ashley.

[personal profile] shiori_makiba has written the demifiction "Activity Scouts Notice" detailing ways that they and other citizens can help clean up Easy City after the berettaflies.

"Haruko's Messages" is my followup to "Delivery Road Show" by [personal profile] dialecticdreamer.  It details one packet of the messages in his care package, along with his response.

[personal profile] siliconshaman has posted "Fade to Grey" Part 1.  Find out some of why Ashley was such a mess even before the berettaflies, and how that affects her current situation.  Part 2 is "Fade to Black" where Ashley meets the SPAZMAT team assigned to move her into her new quarters.  Part 3 is "A Whiter Shade of Pale" in which Ashley explores her new home.  You can also read Ashley's letter to Madhukar.  "Oops" is a ficlet about Ashley experimenting with cooking ghost peppers.  See Ashley's customized iso-suit.  "New Friends" shows Ashley and Haruko getting to know each other.  "Breaking Out, Breaking Down" is another incident of Ashley's new superpowers making her life more difficult.  "Intermezzo" features Ashley and the Captain talking about plants and coping skills.  It directly follows "Truth and Dare" (start with Part 1) by [personal profile] dialecticdreamer.  "Forms and Fittings" follows Ashley and Haruko in search of new clothes.  Part 1, Part 2, Part 3.

[personal profile] shiori_makiba has posted "Advert: All Bodies All Beautiful," a demifiction piece about a company that makes products for soups.  "Demifiction: All Bodies All Beautiful Emails Ashley" which invites Ashley to work with them on developing personal products that will work with her souped-up body.

[personal profile] siliconshaman has written the story "Ghost Dance" in which Ashley finally gets fed up with Candy Cane.  Part 1, Part 2.

Here (LJ) is a letter to the editor, from the first week of the berettafly emergency.

I had the page for the informational template but now I can't find it. Could someone please make a single central berettafly index page, with info for readers (especially subgroup index pages like this one) and participants?

Never are guarantees. As resources allow.

As a ... whatever ... tonight I started assembling my own list, starting with a Google search for "berettaflies". Eventually I quit as I realized that I was duplicating what was already done, but I'm emailing you what I've got just in case it's helpful.

Ysabet forwarded the list you sent over and thank you so so so so so so so much for doing that. <3 That contained pretty much all of the prose pieces I've been struggling with adding. <3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

Am I overdoing it on the hearts? I hope not. I really, really, really appreciate this. I think there's... about 2 pieces left to add details to now? Just... Thank you. Thank you so much. <3

You may want to repeat the Web search for "berettaflies" tp be sure you haven't missed any. The search brings up some duplicates, but I don't think it'll miss any.
