ysabetwordsmith: (Schrodinger's Heroes)

This poem is spillover from the July 1, 2014 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by prompts from [personal profile] technoshaman and [personal profile] dialecticdreamer. It also fills a square on my Plot Challenges Bingo Card 7-4-14:
Situation: Deliverance
Setting: Forbidden Zone
Complication: I told you so

"Bedroom Eyes"

The small glowing eyes that only Schrodinger could see
were skulking around the Teflon Tesseract,
and it made the black cat increasingly suspicous.

This was his compound and these were his people
and it was his job to keep them all safe
from the hazards of manifold reality.

Alex could fix anything, of course, if she knew about it;
but Alex only spoke about forty words of Cat and
Schrodinger's production of Human was even more limited.

Schrodinger made a valiant attempt anyway to explain
that there was an incursion going on which hadn't tripped any alarms
but needed to be stopped before it could do serious harm.

So when the small glowing eyes began going into bedrooms,
something had to be done about that immediately
and clearly Schrodinger was the only person who could.

The catch was that he wasn't allowed into all of the bedrooms,
and by the time he had worked out the calculations for where
the small glowing eyes would go next, they were headed for Kay's.

Kay's bedroom was off-limits for the very good reason
that she tended to react violently to being touched while asleep,
and Schrodinger had no desire to punch through one of nine lives.

But there were small glowing eyes in Kay's bedroom,
so the small furry hero licked his whiskers and sharpened his claws
and ventured into the shadowy realm of no-cat's-land.

The small glowing eyes soon appeared above the sleeping Kay,
whereupon Schrodinger screwed up his courage and pounced,
catching the left eye in his claws and shredding it into mist.

The sleeping soldier came awake with a roar
and the swish of the knife that she kept under her pillow
as the rightward eye caromed off the nightstand.

Schrodinger ping-ponged around the bedroom in hot pursuit
of the small glowing eye as it fled hysterically from the mighty hunter
and Kay rang down curses of almighty doom in her nightshirt.

All of his efforts to warn Kay about the invader were in vain;
she wasn't aiming her knife at the small glowing eye
but flung it aside and began chasing Schrodinger instead.

Just as the outraged soldier managed to grab him by the scruff,
Schrodinger closed his jaws around the remaining eye and held on
while Kay sent him sailing out into the hallway beyond her door.

Roused by the racket, Alex and Bailey came rushing up,
Bailey with an incursion tracker held in his hand, which gave
one tiny, almost inaudible blee-blip as Schrodinger landed.

So the small glowing eyes were detectible after all once they were
bleeding heavily enough -- well, that was easy enough to arrange, as
Schrodinger bit the eye in half and spat it at Bailey's feet like a mouse.

"Good kitty!" Alex said, petting him. "You killed an invisible pest!"
Schrodinger slitted his eyes at Kay, watching them from her door,
and grumbled in Cat, "I told you there was something in the compound."

He's a definite MEMBER of the team. I love that!

Good kitty! :)

Yewwww. I wonder if the incursion detector can get enough off the remaining, damaged invisi-snoop to tell just what the frak it is/where it's in from.

... Hmm. I can see Sister being one who doesn't react too well to being awakened by sudden startles, or at least, startles of a sort that aren't a medical emergency. Then she's fine. No knives under her pillow, though.

I get the idea that someone grabbing Sister while she's asleep i.e. to shake her awake without saying anything would be bad news. Someone tries that and they ain't Doc, oof. And he wouldn't try that; he's got sense, and he knows his partner.

I tend to agree with you there, yeah. At least in most situations.

Cats have magneto sense... magnetite crystals in retinal cells to be exact, allowing them to see magnetic fields. As well as the ability to see circular-polarized light. Ergo for some senses of the world, cats are magic and do have super-vision.

That makes sense.

I tend to define "superpower" as something that is nonstandard for a species. Retractile claws are normal for cats but would be a superpower for humans, enabling that person to do things better than other people or even do things they can't do at all.

Well, of course cats see things mere humans don't :-) . And good on Schroedinger for being willing to brave Kay's wrath.
