"Dangerous Knowledge"

Our daughter loves
science and magic
with equal passion.

With the Eye of Fate
around her neck
and one hand on the collar
of her seeing-eye gremlin,
she runs headlong through life,
rarely hesitating for a moment.

We try to teach her
that some knowledge
is dangerous for you to know
because it might hurt you,
while some is dangerous to know
because it might hurt someone else,
and quite a lot is more dangerous
not to know because then
you can't avoid trouble before it comes.

The hard part
is learning how
to tell them apart.

So we let her spend long weekends
with her grandmother,
who understands the risks
and the potentials
of knowledge and ignorance,

and who is perfectly willing
to teach chemistry by baking
chocolate-chip cookies
instead of reading out of a book.

Sometimes our daughter comes home
smelling of smoke or humming
science jingles under her breath,
other times wreathed in fairie-lights
like a crown of jewels in her touseled hair.

One thing is certain:
nobody is going to
get away with saying,
"Girls can't ..." to her.

Because to me it's not about /girls/ can't, but /disabled can't/... an obstacle she obliterates with a shrug. There's another sibling, too, which makes me wonder what their relationship is like.
