ysabetwordsmith: (monster house)

This poem came out of the March 4, 2014 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by prompts from [personal profile] rosieknight, LJ users My_partner_doug, Zianuray, and Kelkyag. It also fills the "getting away from it all" square in my 2-1-14 card for the [community profile] cottoncandy_bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by [personal profile] chanter_greenie. It belongs to the series Monster House.

"The Antique Icebox"

Melinda loved the radiator dragon.
She always greeted him
when she came over to play
with my son and the bogeyman.

Sometimes she would take a stick
and tie a piece of tinfoil to the end,
then dangle it in the air above the radiator
for the dragon to chase.

One time Melinda came with us
on a camping trip to a quaint little cabin
tucked away in the woods.

The cabin was in good repair,
but we were warned repeatedly
not to open the icebox
under any circumstances,
only the food compartment above
the cabinet that held the ice.

That particular warning
went out the window when
Melinda plopped herself down
beside the antique icebox
and began making hissy noises at it.

In our defense,
we did not open the icebox.
The frost dragon inside
escaped on his own.

It took a while to catch him
as he went cavorting around the cabin,
but eventually Melinda coaxed him
back into his nest with bits of popsicle.

When the park attendant asked us
if we'd had any trouble with the icebox,
we just smiled and shook our heads.
We had to buy extra popsicles that weekend,
but that was all right.

After we got home, the radiator dragon
hissed and fussed at all of us,
like a cat smelling a stranger,
and refused to behave
until Melinda sat beside the radiator
singing lullabies in her little-girl voice
and holding out marshmallows for him to toast.

Wonderful addition

I think your whole monster house series is so much fun because I can easily see /our/ house the same way, even though it's a totally different style, post ww2 construction, et cetera.

Still, it's fun to imagine.

<3 <3 <3 this poem, and especially <3 the green dragon icon. I have a (3-D) dragon (trapped in a box somewhere, alas), with *very* similar lines to this, but in a darker green, somewhere between kelly and pine.

I love Melinda!

It looks like the Bogeyman knew exactly what he was doing when he brought her to their house the night her parents invoked him.

I'm glad she appeals to you.

I think so, yes. She's a good fit for them.
